Some Les Paul Studios are selling for around a grand new; less if they're used. Buy one and have a good technician install a third pickup. People used to put a third pickup in Gibson guitars quite often back in the 70s. You'd still be under your $1,500.00 price limit.

This. If you can find a Studio for around $500 used, another fee of probably around $100-150 for a cavity route(I'm guessing the price though) and you'll have a Les Paul with 3 pickups for as much as the Epi black beauty.
