I need to tap the vast knowledge base that is UG...

My mother found this a a flea market down near Tampa, FL. Seems in decent shape. The seller said he was told it was a 1947 when he bought it. I'm leaning toward mid-50's to early 60's. It has L1603 N1 stamped faintly inside. I know Old Kraftsman was sold by Kay to Spiegel for catalog sales. She will be here in 3 weeks.

Any ideas what around when it was really made?

Give me a pic of the headstock. That is usually the determining factor in a rough age of "Kay/Old Kraftsman" guitars.

Inside the soundhole pices might help also. More Pics = more uable information.

Its possible that you have a pre=war on your hands, but I can't really say until I see more.

Hopefully I can find out something for you.

It won't be here for 3 weeks. I've requested some pics be taken and sent of the headstock and inside the sound hole.

I'll put them up when they get here.

Thanks Bill.

Mom is quick!

Here are the pics:

You can see the L1603 faintly through the sound hole.

The back looks clean

The headstock as requested

The tuning machines are stamped DELUXE

The tuning machine posts and frets look to be brass.

I hope this helps.

If she looks above the oil hole on the tuners, she should see the "Kluson" stamped in the metal.

On the bottom, under and below the deluxe is where there should be a patent number. If she can get that, we can find out when the tuners were made. That should be a fairly definite guide to the age of the guitar.

I would guess around 1964 based on the headstock and the logo, but the tuners are a better bet here.

Mom called back. The tuning cases are pretty dirty. She can see 71 and a DE ... maybe. It may have to wait until it gets here.

Let's wait and get it right.
