Howdy.

I'm planning to make a guitar that's fairly original and ambitious for me (which isn't saying too much). The concept is that I'm going to be taking a strat body and cutting a couple chunks out of it around the cutaways. Here's a mock up sketch I did (sorry for the poor quality, of both my drawing and picture):

I've tried my best to show things but I'll explain.

The wood would either be paulownia or alder or ash.

The pickguard would obviously be custom made.

The jack would be an oval strat style jack that would fit snugly into the pickguard.

The bridge would be telecaster style (which I know would be strange with the hole fitted for a strat style trem, but I figure I can compensate for this by gluing a drilled piece of wood into the hole for the strings to thread through).

I also intend to install Filtertron style pups and use this style of switch to turn each pickup on and off (as represented by the small rectangles which would obviously be bigger to scale):

I just want to know what you guys think of the concept. What wood would be best? What you'd do to improve? etc.

This is still very much in planning stages. I'm not exactly well funded here either which is something to consider. Overall I can maybe stretch to £300-400 but I wouldn't feel great about busting that.

looks good! pickups gonna be P90's humbuckers or single coils?

edit: minor change i'd make is have the knobs/pots as the two volume ones on the top and the tone pot the bottom one
Belief is a beautiful armour but makes for the heaviest sword.

The knob change makes more sense your way. I'm not sure about my switch placement either as they probably wouldn't fit there.
And I won't be going single coils anyway. Humbuckers probably but maybe humbucker sized P90s.

That looks awesome, i would very happily buy a guitar like that. it reminds me of rickenbacker basses.

Hurray! Was kinda going for this along with a bit of tele and jaguar. Love the 4003 shape. The current working name is "bastardcaster".

I can see the tele and jaguar now youve said that. there my two favourite guitars, and i love rickenbacker basses. youve effectively made my dream guitar.

Nice shape. Classier than Rickies' basses. What neck joint? A PRS Custom set-neck neck joint would be awesome.
#12
Oh!! And also, cut the tele bridge plae right behind the pickup. Keeps the same look but you can actually change your pickups with out I being a pain in the arse

Was just going to go with bolt on. But how hard would the PRS joint be? Keep in mind that it's going to be a strat body conversion.

Not entirely sure what you mean by this.

PS: I agree the wilshire headstock would look pretty good.

Ever thought about string thru? Then you don't have to worry about a pocket, and you can have a maple stripe going throgh your ash guitar.

Add-in: And the bridge plate thing, I mean cut it off just south of the pickup, and basically just use it as a pickup ring, not have it connect to the actualy bridge. Tele bridges are bitches because you can't change pickups with out taking off the whole bridge, and you sure can't test pickups.

ok looks good, but your going to have an issue with that neck pocket. judging by the sketch.. thers not alot of wood on either side of the neck.

the shape is awesome tho..

Was worried about this. Would it really be a structural concern?

I mean looking at a guitar like the Danelector 59, it doesn't appear to have much wood on either side of the neck but seems like a structurally sound guitar.

I see what you mean. It might be handy so I'm considering it.

And it won't matter on the wood pattern or anything cos it'll likely be painted a solid colour.

Ebony or maple fingerboard?

Not sure yet cos I'm also not sure what colour it'll be. Leaning towards something darker though so probably not maple.

Just say ebony then to shut me up. I despise (however you spell that) rosewood.

What about Seafoam Green and a white or creamy/off-white pickguard? That would be cool. Also if you have an ebony fingerboard and a black headstock, the seafoam green would be cool on the edge.

I don't have anything against rosewood, but ebony might be nice for a change.

And I'm not sure about about seafoam green. I prefer my colours to be a bit bolder. Although I have seen lot of lovely seafoam green guitars.

Dude... seafoam green is pretty out there, lol. But you know, if you mean bold as in crazy, try a swirly thing of seafoam green and a nice blue. Kinda like the Tie-Dye YES shirts

Something like that is likely.

I'm joking around with the idea of maybe doing something like this in terms of finish though:

I agree (although I used to want one back in the day). Just couldn't think of another red sparkle guitar of the top of my head.

Oh, sorry. It was weird and took me to the official video for it the first time though.

Not sure about it for me, but my friend I think is looking for a new build (I think) and he loves his 80's hard rock more than anything. Might turn him onto this idea so cheers anyway.
