Elmore is playing in an open tuning on slide guitar; if you want to emulate his sound you might find that you don't sing comfortably in that tuning.
Zaboaa does it in open D, works for him. I would likely do open G.

A lot of slide playing translates from one open tuning to the next with little or no change in technique.
