The other day I went into Newbury Comics to snag a volume of The Sandman and some music. I'm waiting in line and the woman behind the counter is talking excitedly, speaking animatedly. Her arms flailing about I couldn't help but realize that she hadn't shaved her armpits. It wasn't like she just forgot for a few days either, she had the underarm hair of a fully grown man.

I was, of course, horrified. She seemed like a nice person and was very pleasant, but man, I couldn't get over that hair.

Thoughts? Similar encounters? How the **** are you supposed to react to something like that?

Also this. I wanted to make a joke about it but I realised it was too easy.

misleading title...

I'd start spraying axe on her.

I was just curious how the pit would react, I don't care what she does. It won't stop me from returning to the store or from letting her ring up my order, nor would I ever comment on it to her. I've just never seen that and wondered what everyone thought. Pull that goddamn stick out of your butt.

Also feminists seek equal rights regardless of gender. It has nothing to do with personal grooming. I did it as part of some thread a while ago and never changed it.

Yeah I was really taken aback. She was really nice so I felt bad about how violently I had reacted internally.

In my case I figured it was some kind of statement of a sort. Did she seem like some kind of feminist or at least opinionated?

Sorry, but from your first post you seemed really horrified about the fact that some woman dared not to shave! The fact that you asked 'how to react' was just a little strange, especially since feminists are supposed to be opposed to contructed gender norms and so on. I mean, if you saw a man with shaved underarms, would you be 'horrified?'

It's not entirely uncommon these days. I'd do it, I can't stand armpits.

But I can't be bothered.

Society forces women to have to abide to different norms in regards to grooming, such as having to shave everything or mostly everything. Perpetuating that oppression isn't really what feminism is all about, is it?

Basically, to be a feminist and male you have to fuck a girl with some peach fuzz on her upper lip.

Many men shave their armpits these days, or at least keep the hair extremely short? Don't know where you from, it could be something European , but a lot of people assume it to be more hygienic. I shave my armpits as well, it's nicer, specially in summer.
#15
Guys come on, you're all being pretty ****ing self-righteous. The fact is that there are biological constraints and social constraints. Of course it is within her rights to not shave her armpits, but it is within a man's right to find that unattractive.
#16
Might be different to get used to but it wouldn't bug me. People naturally have hair like that, on their legs and everything :p We're just so used to seeing women without it that it takes us off guard when we see it, but I'm sure I could get used to it.
#17
Who cares? mind your own business. If she didn't want to shave it, good on her.

Probably, Europe is a shithole and your culture disgusts me. A lot of Europeans are stupid apparently, which isn't news to me. Go watch your soccer while you shave your armpits you twisted ****.

OT: To be quite honest, I don't really give a shit. I certainly don't find it attractive, but it isn't like I'm going to shun an otherwise very nice girl becaues of it... Actually, I probably would. I'm picky and an asshole and I hate that about myself.

Except that's nonsense; underarm and pubic hair serves a hygienic purpose by keeping bacteria and sweat off the skin.

Is that a joke?

You DO know that sweat comes from INSIDE the body, not from outside, like those evil bacteria you are talking about.

No. It wicks sweat away from the skin.

This made me LOL XD

Personally I dont care what other people do or look like, I just focus on myself and what makes me feel confident.

Alright, no need to turn this into a battle on the definition of feminist. Equal rights is great and all, but I don't agree with many feminist ideals, as I said, it was part of some thread a while ago and I never changed it.

Horrified wasn't the right word, I was taken aback. As I said she seemed like a lovely, enthusiastic person. I'm sure I could get over it after spending more time with her, I've just never encountered that, blame my sheltered upper-middle class community.

Here's the thing. Was this woman your girlfriend? It doesn't sound like it. Then, why the hell do you care about her armpits? It may gross you out, but grow up.
In many European countries, women don't shave at all. While not particularly appealing to our American sentiments, it's none of our damn business whether they do or not. I once dated a(n American) girl who flat out told me that, in the winter, she didn't bother to shave her legs. She figured no one was going to see them anyway, most of the winter. I was fine with it.

Why exactly are you freaked out because some woman has armpit hair, TS?!

Wow, that's a compelling argument. It's also ignorant.
Just because something is not what you're used does not mean that Europe a shithole or that their culture is disgusting or that Europeans are stupid.

Why on earth do Americans think that about 'European' women? Why specifically Europe, anyway? I'm sure not shaving is a lot more common in places like Asia and Africa where people have more important things to think about.

Americans are weird.

Why do you think I'm ignorant or not used to European culture? You're an idiot who doesn't know anything about Europe by the sounds of it, do everyone a favour and go crawl in a hole and die.

Because a lot of American tourists go to Europe. It's basically that simple. Plus, it's partially a joke related to some of the ridiculous movies related to European culture, like "Euro Trip" and such.
And, yes, we're very weird.

It's like the phrase, "Gay or European?". It's hard to tell sometimes.

Please, troll more about my native continent. Yes, it's not a coutry, it's a continent. And also: there is no such thing as 'European culture'. There's French culture, German Culture, English culture, etc. Though there is no general European culture. Not at all.

All we have in common is the Euro and the European Union and stuff like that. That's about it, IMO.

And, OT: a lot of women, in Holland atleast, dó shave their armpits. I wouldn't mind them with some hair, I just don't like a big bush of it.
