Every song the pianist plays at church has a little chord progression or melody that I captures my emotions.. The first chord sounds like a sus2/sus4 or add9 chord, then the next one sounds like a major chord. I usually hear it during the chorus of the song.

Does anyone know about this?

Ask the pianist.

Or the good old Plagal cadence IV-I. Also called an Amen cadence.

I do notice that gospel influenced music have a certain melody that catches my ear. Like, if I heard Stryper, even though I never listened to them before, I could guess they are Christian by the vocal melodies, sounds like something from church.

Well I could've been a lazy arse and not link the exact note sequence he posted.

Oh wait, point to thread or something. It's just a bloody suspension. And in the case of BWV 565, a Picardy third.

EDIT:

Not to be confused with its less gifted cousin, retardation.

Sorry.

Sorry.

There's a Picardy third there for the resolution (is it a Picardy Third if it's from a diminished chord? meh, doesn't matter) but there's a suspension in there which isn't as similar to the one I posted as I thought.

By the way, I'd bang it's other cousin, Augmentation

There's a large number of chords you could be speaking of, but I know what you're trying to say, I do the same thing in my worship band, use sustain chords and follow them by a huge major chord, has a good impact, and helps with the dynamics.

This thread is over.
The content of this signature is pretty much irrelevant
#36
It really could be Gsus...

I don't know if you mean the final chord is on the same root or if it moves. If it's on the same root, it's essentially resolving the suspended 4th to a 3rd, which is most likely the case with a suspension chord.

...modes and scales are still useless.

Thats the end to Bach's Prelude in C, although its a very common resolve.

And that Gsus joke was amazing, and I regret to say that it took me a minute.

At first, I just found it amusing that he threw a random guess.
