So my family and I might be moving to North Yorkshire in about a year. Lived there when I was a little kid and always wanted to go back. Anybody here live there/from there? Any secrets or fun stuff to do I might not know about?

Also, any good guitar stores in the close cities like York or Harrogate?

I live in York, it's pretty good. I would say the best guitar shop is Mormusic, but I just try stuff out there and then buy it off the internet for cheaper anyway...

I'll be going to the University of York this October, so I'll keep an eye on this thread.

I live in Harrogate and go to uni in York so...

Yeah s'all good! Nice places. I don't know really what you're looking for from a guitar shop, but both places have them. York has biggers ones though, but that's probably because it's a city.

If not, Leeds is half an hour's train from either place and that's a much bigger city.

Nah just kidding, colleges mean pretty much nothing apart from which name you put in the chant "*college* till I die! I'm *college* till I die!", but still people will always claim their college is best. The whole college system is pretty much useless really, it's just a way of breaking down administration.

Yeah, 'cause Guildford's a well-known city in NORTH YORKSHIRE

OT: Never been there myself, but it sounds pretty goddamn nice there. Just walk around the countryside and discover things for yourself, it's even better that way.

The City of York has some cool bars if you search hard enough. My favourites being The Evil Eye Lounge and The House Of The Trembling Madness

Aye York has a good mix of these classy bars with a sort of cult following, standard old school pubs, and night-out type bars and clubs.

Although I am sick of people going "oh yeah Evil Eye! GO TO EVIL EYE! EVIL EYE BLAH BLAH BLAH".

I had some rice there during the day once. Was quite nice.

Apart from the people on the JCRC and any other committee haha. They get really fired up. I got rejected for being a STYC for making fun of the application form... They didn't like someone not taking their meaningless roles seriously...

They wanted people to come back and take care of the freshers, and like everyone else I wanted to so I could go back to my old accommodation and meet new people. They didn't have enough people but their pride was still such that they rejected me anyway haha.

York's great. In terms of guitar shops, Mor music is a really great local shop, quite small, but the guy is really friendly and they have a selection of high end as well as cheaper gear. On the outskirts there is Gear4Music, which is a big internet chain. Loads of stuff there to try out as well.

I have a really important question for everybody at the university and/or the city in general. How good is the beer there? One of my friends went to the beer festival the other day and tried a bunch of beer from York. He said that they were all incredibly bad.

I'm guessing you mean ales? I mean, obviously you can most all beers you can get anywhere else...

But on the ale front, (North) Yorkshire is pretty big on micro-breweries and the like. Black Sheep is probably the biggest name and that's based in North Yorkshire. You get a lot of specialist pubs in York anyway, so there's a good selection if that's your thing.

Ha. Some of my friends were 'parents' in James college last year, apparently if you do get to do it they give you a lecture about not having sex with the freshers.

Pfft but that's why most people do it!

Certainly a couple of my STYCs last year did. I'm only really bitter though that it wasn't with me... the lady involved was FIT.

And Black Sheep tastes like arse. There's a lot of good breweries based in Yorkshire that you'll probably come across.

Eh Yorkshire is okay as far as counties go. Much better than Lancashire which is dreadful unless you are living comfortably in one of the larger cities (honestly driving between Leeds and Middleton is one of the most progressively depressing journeys I have ever taken).

I'm more or less bored of the North though now. Will probably move to Leeds before the end of the year for work and it is entertaining enough there but I expect to find work somewhere else within the next few years. I've been learning German over the summer because I really want to move to Berlin someday.

I hope you are joking. Manchester is fine but Lancashire as a whole is a much worse place to live than Yorkshire. The small towns are all just so damn ugly.

I went to a beer festival in Sheffield last month and tried loads of interesting beers and I have to agree Black Sheep is bland as fuck by comparison.
