I like Vadim Pruzhanov from Dragonforce. I guess it's used for for synth style stuff than anything. At least from what I've heard from bands with a keyboard player (like three).
I would say it works best along the more fantasy style metal like some power metal.

Usually it is better used sparingly. They are most effective in Funeral Doom, especially if it is using an organ sound.I think all in all keyboards are better off being used for Ambient music.

I love when its used as a symphony like it Epica and Kamelot and some Nightwish. Idk I really like them. Jordan Rudess has to be my fav though so I obviously like it in DT but I also like Vanden Plas.

It's turned sort of cheesy alot of the times when I hear it, but it's mostly the tone that tends to get used constantly.

Norther, COB, Naildown, Kalmah, ect: That weird, medieval sounding keys tone that gets really corny after awhile

Dream Theater and every other generic prog band: That 90s RPG, dungeons and dragons style tone that you just KNOW they were playing a PS1 when they wrote that song.

That's the only two really, any others are alot more listenable and not as cheesy.

Personally I like the old piano sound with alot of reverb, sound's cool brah. :3

used best as another layer to the atmosphere, unless you're summoning or Nazgul, then it's pretty much center stage.

Gay. Except for Abigor and few selected others.

Jazz.

I do enjoy keyboards in metal. Not as a main lead instrument, but there to create texture. Examples being The deathalbum II, Some SOAD, and tool. Also I like what Stewie Swan's band has done with keyboards.

Skepticism-Alloy has the best use of Keyboards in Metal now that i think of it.

I don't like organs, they sound really churchy and I heard them constantly throughout the beginning of my life, so meh.

Most bands I listen to don't need it. DT has the most obnoxious keyboard tone. hat is all I cam to say.

This sig is colored just to annoy the UG classic users.

Trying to think of witty things to put in my sig. Message if you have ideas.

Count orlok is acceptable. And yeah DT is terrible on all fronts, especially the keys.Nothing is worse than petrucci and that other wanker playing the same wanky lead with that terrible guitar tone and keyboard tone mixed.

Pretty much.
I always love it cause you can do leads, or add thick accomaniment.

I find the best thing I use keys for is to fill in full chords while guitar does powerchords. That way you get a really full sound thats still heavy. It also adds lots of atmosphere when playin minor chords (like in blackmetal)

Good examples here:

At 4:00 aprox. Kinda hard to hear but adds so much to the sound.

I've noticed the same. Mostly from listening to opeth, but Black Metal as well.

I love the guitar tone... but Rudiss(Sp?) needs something different for his keyboard sound.

hmm I like some funeral doom and some Sunn O))) and organs... but that song you linked I found incredibly dull lol. ATM I'm listening to Alloy though, it sounds much better... all instruments seem a tad more involved. For whatever reason I don't feel their Organ tone's all too... evil haha [funny/odd thing to say I guess] interesting so far though.

I don't mind some synth heavy music... but I guess my fav use of keyboards has been done by Mirrorthrone.. and Cenotaph and Dt in Soulside Journey, I can't think of any more off the top of my head

[edit] @ Severed-Metal, that link... that organ melody at 2:50 is freaking gorgeous and dark/weird lol

Well Alloy is a masterpiece, beyond Funeral Doom into something new, that album is extremely involved melodically.I think all of Skepticism's work is prime though.

lol no symhonic metal with a keyboard synth just doesn;t sound the same as an orchestra wich is why i love Metallica's S&M album

Nostradamus from Priest! I think keyboards, it gives some depth to the song. Although I wouldnt recommend it. And what about Deep Purple? Jon Lord? Amazing stuff there. And preffereably classical is what would tie in the best.

A few of my favourite keyboardists

Saturious from Nokturnal Mortum
Æðelwalh from fen, formally of Wodesnthrone
Eero Pöyry from Skepticism

I was going to say whoever does keys for Khors, but I can't seem to find anyone credited for doing them, and I can't find my copy of any of their albums, but I have a feeling it might be Saturious again.

Only 3 metal bands that I listen to have keyboards.

Nocturnus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2RH9QEU050

Sadist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH8fbH28bPM

Timeghoul: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDbAQRMG4zE

Mostly, I'd say keys suck, but there are exceptions. Timeghoul used them only to add to the atmosphere, but still more than dm bands usually did to gain that same effect. I suppose Nocturnus had em to give off that sci-fi edge, while Sadist began to use them as very crucial part of the songs. All these apply them to a different degree, but they all tickle my fancy so it definitely can work in metal.

Oh god yes. Although I prefer their first (Sataroth?) keyboardist much more. I'm moe familiar with Lunar Poetry/Goat Horns however.

Cenotaph's Gloomy Reflections, Timeghoul's demos gogogo

I'm liking that Apolion's Genocide band

So keyboards in metal. Some love it some hate it.

...and some think it's OK.

What do you think bout it? Who's some of you're fav key players? What sort of styles do you find it works best with?

Keyboards are good when they add something to the music. They suck when they don't. There are a variety of instances of both. I don't think there are any set rules to them, although I've generally seen them used best in Black Metal and, as was mentioned by RiffRaff, Funeral Doom.
