So I never really like to discuss my gear purchases. With the exception of my Mesa MkV, which I asked MatrixClaw about, almost all my purchases were made independent of UG.

Not that I don't trust you guys, but I know specifically what I want, and why I want it, and ain't nobody's gonna tell me otherwise or change my mind.

Anyways, all my guitar life, I've listened to metal and I've always wanted to play metal. What I've play has varied and changed. It started from Metallica, then on to Megadeth, Lamb of God, Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy and so on and so forth.

Hence all my guitars have always needed 2 characteristics.

1. They need to be metal.

2. They need to be versatile (well at least depending on how I define versatile at that stage of my life).

So, first I got an Ibanez RG (this was in 2000, from the Fujigen factory). Its got a Flyod Rose, 2 'buckers and 1 single coil. I later installed push-pull pots to allow changing the 'buckers from serial to parallel wiring and back. Versatile.

A shredder superstrat. Pretty metal.

Then I graduated to 2 Alexi Laiho sig RR (MIJ Edwards, shape accurate. Not the LTD King Vs).

and then

For those who know me, I installed contemporary Bare Knuckle pups in all my guitars. Makes them all the more metal. After the Pink Sawtooth, I thought I was set for life.

However, for quite a while now, I've been eyeing this really beautiful guitar in burst blue stain. Its like you spot the one girl you know you want really bad, but don't get her. You go on to other girls, but you never really forget about the one that got away.

So for the past month, since I got my new job offer, I've been eyeing this one guitar again.

Due to the costs (SG$4,800) I've been going back and forth about buying her. Couldn't make up my mind. On Tuesday, I called to reserve her as I didn't want to lose her again. At the same time, I still went back and forth about getting her.

Then last night, I though, ah frak it. I'll get her, and be happy about it. I'll make the money back, but I can't stand losing her to someone else again.

So today, I went down and just bought her, just like that. Come to think of it, other than a 2 minutes test on Tuesday, I didn't get to try her again.

Anyways, without further ado, my baby.

Hmm? Where's the logo?

Ah bollocks to that, where's the logo? Don't tell me I brought the wrong girl home.

Oh what is this? She's got a 10 written on her head, I wonder what's that mean?

Anyways, I'll skip the silliness and get straight to the point, I think everyone's a little tired of my sob story

An American PRS Custom 24, 2011 production model, 10 top in faded blue burst!

I bet you were expecting some metal guitar! Nope, the one I've been eyeing for 5 years now is a PRS Custom 24. She don't look metal, but I've played Arch Enemy on her, and she really gets it on!

Down her neck, don't think dirty now.

The new 5 way blade selector

And some birds to round off the whole shebang.

Apologies, I realise that the pictures are a little blurry and shaky. However, due to a slight issue, I ain't got the most stable hands around.

So, for those who have spoken to me, you'd probably realise I'm one metalhead. I think maybe one or more were expecting another pointy metal guitar too.

However, among all the guitars I've ever seen, the only one to catch my eye and stay in my mind is the PRS Custom 24.

For some reason, it comes across as really beautiful to me. I'd have like to have her with a stoptail and a rotary selector. However, given that I managed to acquire a 10 top in the colour I've been eyeing since the 2011 production models were released, I'd say she's practically perfect, the stoptail and rotary selector are minute points in comparison.

This, I can say, honestly, is the /GAS guitar. I feel complete. Like the world is at one, the moment I got my hands on her. As you can see, she's beautiful.

Pictures don't do her justice. The burst is amazing, almost 3D like, while the grains of the wood show through so well, you can't see it in the pictures, but the level of detail in the wood is eye-popping.

Overall on a scale of 1 - 10 (where 1 is a absolute shite instrument for me, and 10 is my perfect instrument), I'd say this scores 9.9 for me. The 0.1 mark-down being the lack of the stop-tail and the rotary selector.

The best thing about the Custom 24 is how well she fit into my play style and body. She felt so natural and I felt at ease playing her. The guitar is well balanced, sits well, is not too heavy, but at the same time solid and sturdy. When I picked her up, she just felt right.

I always disliked varnished necks, when I got my ESP, which had a stain neck, it was so comfortable. The one thing about varnished necks is how they get sticky and feel grubby after an hour's play. While I've not extensively tested the PRS, based on my testing so far, it still grubbs up a little, but its not sticky and it doesn't get uncomfortable playing.

The best part for me is the sound. I didn't really realise that my Edwards Alexi had some unbalanced frequencies, until I played the PRS. I took 2 minutes to test it, and in that time, I found that the sound was so full and rounded. None of the frequencies got ice-picky, nor did the bass get overpowering, and the mids did not get to nasally. Maybe its the maple and mahogany body, but the sound really filled out the sonic spectrum IMO.

Best of all, I always found the channel 2 of my Mesa Mk V a little unusable. With my Ibanez (basswood), it got too nasally, and the gain seemed very subdued. With my Alexi, it was a little too gainy, that there was little difference between channel 2 and channel 3.

However, with the PRS, the channel 2 sounds distinct, and full. I get the sound that I want, and it doesn't overlap with channel 3.

Despite my initial worry that I'd have paid S$4,800 for a guitar, and it doesn't live up to its cost. I'm now happy beyond words and will say that's one of the best decisions I have.

Now I feel whole.

Enjoy her anyway, the top on that is absolutely stunning.

I'll try to get better definition pictures of the top and the grain, it looks a lot better in person.

I'll also try to re-do the pictures as they are pretty shaky.

Those are literally all the guitars I want. If the Alexi Laiho model had a neck pickup I'd be all over it.

I was considering routing out a space for neck pickup at one point.

ah, while I usually do my own wiring, the parallel-serial wiring was a pain the arse enough that I just gave up and paid someone to do it for me haha.

Thanks man, I didn't expect the Singapore dealer to bring in such an epic instrument. They usually only get limited stock of a few models in a few colours.

I'm really luck that they brought in a Custom 24 in the colour I want, and the higher end models no less.

When I went back to the store's other brand, and saw some of the retail guys I knew, they couldn't believe I was the one that bought the PRS, and so soon after it arrived.

According to the store, my PRS had just come in less than a week ago.

I'll try for some clips, but it'll be iPhone quality. I'll use the same settings, but record my Ibby and Edwards for reference. I won't play no fancy riffs tho, just some simple stuff for everyone to hear the tone.

I'll take new pictures, along with one of the back of the neck, tomorrow. Its my first day at the new work place, and I'm drained from going through orientation and looking through questionnaires.

dude you know i love you, but i just hate to see posts like this. you ARE worthy. just because you think you don't "deserve it" or don't feel "worthy" doesn't mean you don't or aren't. it just means your perception bla bla bla.
a fine instrument won't make you better (i'm not saying you implied it would etc etc) it will just do a lot of things better than 5 cheaper ones.

i bet you don't use an mid level wake board.

Thanks Gregs, I was really worried about dropping so much money on a guitar. However, it is really epic.

You are right its damn sweet... I'm utter convinced it stopped my GAS dead in its tracks.

REVIEWS:

Anyways, just to tack on a little more to my review earlier.

After trying out Bare Knuckles Pickups, other pickups seemed lack luster in comparison.

Initially I had the grand idea that I would get a set of Aftermaths and plonk them into my Custom 24 (this was about 1 month ago when I was still deciding on the guitar).

After more testing and playing today, I must admit I'm surprisingly pleased with the stock PRS pickups. By no means are they as vocal as the Bare Knuckles, and they aren't really as muscular. The other down side is that they aren't as harmonically rich as BKPs.

However, they are very clear, articulate (very clear note separation), and very versatile. The neck pickup isn't too warm, while the bridge pickup is hot, but not overy hot or muddy.

I must admit, the pickups are very versatile, and pretty much serves all my needs in terms of clarity and tone. Although I need to qualify that I'm certain a considerable portion of that tonal excellence is probably also attributable to the quality of the wood and the construction of the Custom 24.

So, just to give everyone a quantifiable rating of my opinions. Please note that the following list is a description of what I look for, and what I consider key characteristics in a pickup:

# Characteristic Rating (out of 10)
1. Clarity (8.5 / 10)
2. Note separation (8 / 10)
3. Note definition (8 / 10)
4. Harmonics (7 / 10)
5. Tonal balance (lows vs mids vs highs) (8 / 10)
6. Note articulation (7.5 / 10)

Note that this rating is in direct comparison of the tonal capabilities of the HFS pups in the Custom 24, vis-a-vis various Bare Knuckle pickups that I own.

Given the stiff competition, I'd say that the Custom 24 pups fare pretty well.
