Budget: Under $700
Type of music: All kinds, Hard rock and metal mostly though (Some Blues though)

Gibson Les Paul or HSS Strat.
Great deals if you go used.

Get a 7 string guitar , they're amazing for metal.

Wuss.

TS, you need a 10-stringer so you can dump the bassist from your band.

it's so cool to hate Gibson, even the federal Department of Justice hates them.

i also have all three of those brands. it just depends what you want to do with it. metal generally isn't generally played with single coils, although you could. some prefer the tone of a single coil or tapped bucker better clean than a regular bucker.

ibanez is a decent compramise, they have quite a few models with bother 'buckers and SC's, but their major downside is poor quality tremolos on cheaper models, but there are quite a few hardtail ibanez's out there.

a fender MIM (made in mexico) strats are really cheap used on a site like craigslist, i picked mine up for $225 with case, but for that price you may have to shop around a bit.

with $700 you could get a faded les paul or SG, just haggle with the store or Music123 (easiest site to haggle). they get a bad rep, but i own two and i really like mine, i actually prefer the feel of the grain as opposed to gloss.

if i were you i would go for a hardtail ibanez and a MIM Fender strat -or- a faded and/or used Gibson.

Nah....don't really need all that. They all make guitars that will cover most any style of music.

That said, Get you an Ibanez (or for the difference in price, get 2-3 Ibanezs)
Ibanez RGR421EXFM, Michael Kelley Vex NV, Ovation Celebrity. Carvin V3
Peavey 412M w/Eminence Wizards & Swamp Thangs, Rocktron Hush Super C, Furman PL-8C,15 band EQ, Boosta grande, ISP Decimator, Dano EQ, Ibanez TBX 150,TC Elec Polytune

Nothing but PRS. If you spend less than two grand on a new guitar you're doing it wrong.

Yeah, the $199 guitars are a little weak. Be sure you spend at least $250 ;-)

Looks like what you really want is a Schecter.

Yep. They're ultra extremely ridiculously versatile, because not only do they have humbuckerrs, but... wait for it... they have COIL TAPS. Schecters can sound like a Les Paul OR a Strat. It's technology from the GODS.
