Are they?

I've never studied psychology, but I have read up on projection, so the idea that homophobes are projecting their repressed homosexual desires makes sense to me.

I also know a guy who's extremely homophobic but I can easily see him being in the closet.

According to Freud (in layman's terms), yes.

But I doubt that. Most people just fear what they don't understand.

No. People are just don't like what is different.

It's actually one of my pet peeves when people think that someone who is anti-anything is really pro-that thing but in the 'closet'.

Some people can be, sometimes people are too scared to admit their true feelings or they don't want to be seen as gay, but there's always a few. The rest are either intolerant or they were raised with an anti-homosexual attitude, but some people change their outlook later in life. There should be a 'Maybe' answer on the poll or something to that effect, it's never just a simple two way answer.

I recently saw the movie American Beauty. In the movie there is also a homephobe guy who secretly is gay.

Good movie.

there's also the alternative that he's checking to see if it's true that Spacey is gay.

but that's stupid, so yes.

Some hate gays because they're repressing their own feelings, some hate gays because they're ignorant.

I think TS meant hateful and not fearful. I've never actually heard of any homophobe who's fear of gays can be compared to someone else's fear of spiders, for example.

OT: It depends, some people are simply full of hatred of gays over religious views or whatever, and others are, well like you said, trying to overcompensate by seeming more masculine and flaming all activities that they regard as 'feminine' or 'girly'.

If that would be the true, the ending would be pretty weird

I'd say the most correct answer is "sometimes". Some people are just ignorant and hateful, some others are just extremely insecure about their sexuality. Even if they are straight after all, it makes them doubt themselves.

No, homophobe means someone who has a fear of homosexuality or finds homosexual acts to be repugnant.

As you can imagine, it'd be pretty hard to be a closet homosexual, or any other kind of homosexual for that matter, if you find homosexuality to be repugnant.

It's like considering an arachnophobe as someone who actualy likes spiders, which'd be pretty silly really when you think about it.

No, I'm an arachnophobe, but I still think spiders are ****ing awesome. I freeze up when I see one IRL, but I enjoy reading about them, looking at pictures of spider webs/spiders etc.

Oh I agree, you can certainly have a fear for something or find it repugnant, while at the same time having an admiration for it. But I think they are two different things.
For instance, I'm an artist, I like studying the male human form and drawing and painting it, but I wouldn't want to f*ck one.

Yeah but you aren't a homophobe (I'm guessing).

Homophobes may not be closet homosexuals, but the vast majority of them are bigger fags than the gay people.

I think it depends. If the people are extremly homophobic, like going overboard, then yes I would say they are homosexual. It was kind of the same case in the movie sex drive, the older brother was an obnoxious homophobe, but at the end of the movie he ended up comming out of the closet

I'm sure in some cases it's true, but not all. Psychology isn't an exact science, you can't take behaviors plug them into the big ol' psychology machine and come out with a correct result. You can only speculate, and speculation differs on a case by case basis. Basically, some people just hate gays. I mean xenophobics aren't closet foreigners.
