Hi everyone,

I'm not entirely sure how popular the RGT grading system is outside of the UK - or, inside it - but I've decided to start on them (at Grade 5)as it seems like a reasonable way to develop as a player.

I like that it's forcing me to learn chords I wouldn't necessarily use (though I understand how to build chords and could figure out a voicing for a particular chord if I needed it), arpeggios, develop my rhythm playing, and learn pieces that push my comfort zone as far as difficulty and technique is concerned. I'm being converted to a finger-picker

Do any of you study the acoustic grades? How useful have you found it?

Absolutely agree. It gives you both a goal to aim for, and an objective benchmark of your progress.

I'm currently working thru a 'teach yourself guitar' book, so I've not yet attempted any of the music exam grades. But I intend to!
