I love my Sony MDR-V6, to my ears they sound great. Sennheiser HD280 are also supposed to be good.

What's your budget? Sennheiser and AKG make some great studio headphones, but they can get quite pricey. I have a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-T22s, and they do the job for me. I use them when recording, practicing, or just listening to music. I think they were ~$125 CAD when I bought them a year or two ago.

My brother has a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-m40s, those are also worth checking out.

Audio Technica ATM-H50s or Beyerdynamic DT770s, either one will last you a long ass time, and are even suitable for mixing and mastering

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.
