i've been playing guitar on and off (mostly off) for about a year and a half now, my favorite genre is 'technical death metal' but most of the stuff I like is too hard for me so I only learn some riffs here and there of songs.

Well anyway I was wondering how do you do things like this?

the opening riff
(heres the tab link for it) http://www.911tabs.com/link/?6446281

also this part in 'lack of comprehension' by death trips me up sometimes (the first verse after the intro)

like i can play it but sometimes i really can't and get tripped up or have to strum the E string and the A string at the same time and what ends up happening is the E string over powers it.

Necrophagist also has lots of this type of technique, so i would like to know what its called and how to get better at it

Palm muting will be your best friend. It's one of the best ways to riffs and not have strings ringing everywhere.

There's also muting with your left hand but I'm not sure how to explain that one. For me It was just something I picked up after a long time of playing.

It's basically alternate picking, but with string skips. You just have to practise it. Don't forget to palm mute the bottom string or it will sound really messy with distortion. For other string skipping stuff look out for Paul Gilbert, he does a lot and it could help you practise. Good luck

i guess I'll start there? thanks guys

That's really not the right kind of string skipping and since I heard the words "you will tense up" in there I would be very much inclined to ignore what he's saying.

Really if you want to learn to play those songs then learn those songs. Take the bits that are giving you trouble and make exercises out of them. Like just that Obscura intro riff, I run that as a pure exercise; just the first I think it's either two or four bars because that's a pretty damned intense picking workout for string skipping.

Other bands to look at for things like this are Necrophagist and Gorod, those and Obscura are some of the cleanest players you'll hear in metal so take a leaf out of their books and just treat their songs as technique workouts.
R.I.P. My Signature. Lost to us in the great Signature Massacre of 2014.

haha those are three of my favorite bands, and the 'use this part of the song as exercise' is a good idea thanks
