I'll keep this short and simple.

I want to use a preamp, but amplify it with a guitar head, not a poweramp.

Is there any way I can do this, AND switch off between the two?

I was thinking of maybe running the preamp into the FX loop on the amp, but idk if that would work.

The amps I'm thinking of are the ENGL E530 (preamp) and the Jet City 100 head.

Thanks guys.

you can run a preamp into an guitar amp. you can either plug it straight into the front of the amp and cascade the external preamp with the guitar amp's preamp:

guitar -> preamp -> guitar amp

or

guitar -> guitar amp

and run the preamp in the effects loop, this will place the external preamp in a different spot in the signal chain of the amp.

or you can run it in the effects loop like so

guitar -> preamp -> effects receive

this way bypasses the guitar amp's preamp.

as far as switching... that could be a bit tricky and depends on how your guitar's effects loop works and how the external preamp works.

How would that be a problem? The Jet City's FX loop is Tube buffered, if that makes a difference

can the effects loop be turned on and off? if it does does it shut off at the send or return.

It can't be turned on and off.

no you cant run both the pre amp and the amps channel with switching. to get the best out of that preamp, you really need to go Guitar-engl preamp-FX retun on JCA100.

EDIT: This completely bypasses the amps preamp and uses it only as a power amp.

I'd be curious to see if you could use a splitter right after the guitar (A/B switch) and go

guitar > Splitter > A > Engl pre > FX return > amp > speakers
..........................> B > amp > speakers (and turn the Pre off or use a volume pedal/killswitch in loop some how)

why is Jet City not in sig?

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking of doing. Like, Dead on. Idk if it would work however.

And Jet City not is sig becausee I had to fit the 6505 quote.

Stupid 250 character limit.
