in theory couldnt i replace the diodes for a 5u4g diode tube in a tubescreamer?
also could i have a list of popular ic replacements? I also want to know if it is possible to stack ic's without a substantial volume drop.

You can, but the sound can be rather unpredictable because of wider tolerance. Tube diodes usually have sharper transient characteristic, so there won't be such mild overdrive. Also they tend to have bigger forward drop, so the pedal will be "cleaner". Thats a nice way to experiment though.

Stack ICs for what purpose?
