Just a quick question really.

The clean channel on my Randall breaks up pretty easily. Now, I usually like a bit of grit in the cleans, but even the neck pickup on my single coil strat pushes the clean channel into more of a crunch.

Just wondering, is there much I can do about this other than turn the channel volume down? It's on about halfway atm, and I would've thought there'd be a little more headroom than that.

Anyways, cheers

TL;DR, anything I can do to stop the clean channel breaking up so quickly?

^^^^^ wow your a big help.

I suppose You could try a pedal like the detox eq from homebrew. Eventually though your gonna want an amp that can do both cleans and gain equally well especially if your giong to be switching between the two alot. I notice you have a zoom too, I don't know much about them but maybe you can use that to your advantage as well.

i've got the zoom in the effects loop to try and sort it out, and it's helped, but nothing amazing really.

yeah, i do plan on upgrading. i don't use cleans a massive amount, but it's nice to have a decent clean channel when i need it. i plan on getting a bugera tri rec at some point anyways, that's got everything i want in it really

I can't find the schematic for that amp but you could try a 12AT7 in V1 to tame it down a bit.

3 12AX7's, 1 EL34 and 1 6L6.

so is it possible to just take out an AX7 and replace it with a AT7?

yes

Hang on, one EL34 and a 6L6???
Now i really do want to see a schematic.

I just did a google on that amp. It is supposed to be running two EL34's. I think we've found your problem.

i know, it's weird.. but i took it to an amp tech when i first got it to sort it out coz the tubes were quite old, and that's what i found in there when he'd done

edit; the thing is, i've got the old model, so the new model specs are no good..

Bring him your guitar, see if he replaces your strings with bass strings...

I'm pretty sure that's a big part of your problem.

Sounds to me like he just chucked in whatever he had laying around. It made noise so he gave it back to you. Go buy yourself a matched pair of EL34's for it. I recomend JJ or SED =C=.

Does that amp have individual biasing for each tube? Cant he mod it to work like an RK ot something with both EL34 and 6L6?
#14
wait hang on.

the randall has a level and a master volume for the clean channel.

are you turning the level up and keeping the master volume down? or are you turning the master up and it's breaking up?
Prs se Holcomb is the answer

It's 50W out of two tubes so it has to be an A/B amp. Even if you could bias them separately it's just wrong.

A/B amps work in pairs right? So he cant bias that way?
And the Roadking and the Egnaters do it pretty nicely

Yes, one valve drives the top half and the other drives the bottom half. Mesa and Egnater are a completely different animal. They don't mate up two different valves as a pair in A/B. They do other sorts of trickery to blend the two tones.

would both of those make it break up? obviously it'd have to be LOUD for the second option
