Hi everyone! I've covered the basics from musictheory.net and am looking to learn some advanced stuff. Are there any free online lessons available? Private tutoring is not an option because of my location(India). There aren't any good teachers for western theory here. Also, I can't take up one to one online video lessons because my internet connection sucks (and I don't have a credit card).

Am I asking too much for too little?
I'm not a James Hetfield fan
My username is "hames jetfield" because "farty mriedman" sounds weird.

A little test to see if you've fully understood what is taught on musictheory.net

1. What key is the extract in?
2. What kind of dissonance is used in the tenor line in the first bar?
2. What is the first chord in the second bar? What kind of harmonic decoration is occurring?
3. Write out the chord progression using roman numerals.
4. What chord (in roman numerals) does the extract end on?
5. How is the final chord decorated?

I decided to give it a try if you don't mind. I don't want my knowledge to get rusty.

This guy has a whole series of 50 videos (10-30 min each) on music theory.
He covers levels 1-3 with a lot of detail. Really helped me.

Make sure you do the the HW assignments thou, cuz the information tends to slip fast.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link, man! I've just started learning theory and these videos are really helpful. Also, the guys geekiness is hilarious, haha.

Im not sure what Advanced Theory is - Theory is Theory, unless youre talking Jazz reharmonizations and avant garde stuff...

The thing isnt what you know, its what do you know that you can use in real time, immediately. You might know a Bm11 form but can you instantly see the notes on the neck and ascertain B D F# A C# E are the notes? To me thats knowing your theory to an advanced degree so that if you wanted to use it musically in real time you could do so, not constrained to some arp pattern etc

Best,

Sean
