Hey guys,

I've finally decided I've wanted to try my hand at something I've been wanting to do my whole life, acting! If there are any actors in the pit, mind telling me how you got started? Also I have never acted before aside from a play and drama class which I loved. How do you suggest getting started? If it helps, I am 16 years old. Thanks guys!

Look online for acting classes; study other actors & see how they prepare for roles.

join drama clubs, join comedy troups, if your area has public access become a producer (i did that for 7 years and it was freakin awesome). basically take speech classes, take writing classes, study story arc and get really REALLY used to standing in front of people and being judged.

also get used to hearing NO and get used to people telling you that you can't do that.

Indeed.

Apply for minor acting roles in shit movies or as an extra in big movies, get to know how filming works and how sets are, and most importantly get contacts.

Then if you're lucky and get enough connections and a decent resume you might get a role in some movie.

Oh, and get an agent that isn't ripping you off.

Another factor that has grown this myth is a bunch of opinionated guys who really don't know what they're talking about, which to be brutally honest is a bunch of you guys on here.

When I was 7, I stole my mom's video camera and made movies with my friends. Then, I would watch the video after and critique my acting. Then I started doing community theater plays and school drama club plays. I've never been "professionally taught". I stopped acting when I was 14 because I lost interest. My advice is don't expect to be the next big thing on broadway or in hollywood, practice memorizing anything like bible verses or song lyrics because remembering your lines can make or break you, never get too cocky and practice in front of a mirror a lot.

You will know if you are improving by audience reactions, say you start being in plays. The goal of acting is to forget everything about yourself and to completely become the person who you are playing, like start thinking how that person would. That is how actors make themselves cry. You have to be just obvious enough so that the people in the back row of the theater know what's going on, but just don't overact or everyone will think the play is a comedy.

Like I said, I haven't acted in years, but at one time it was my goal to be an actor on broadway.

Thanks for the help guys, just one question. How long do you think I should do plays before moving onto the next step? I personally want to do television (commercials, tv shows ) I know that its a hard industry and I don't expect to be the next Shia LeBoeuf or anything but how long should I build up my resume with plays before looking into audition for the things I mentioned before?

idk where you live but look out on craigslist and the personals in your local newspaper for any job opportunities as an extra, and such. It might also be a good idea to make youtube videos, just to get practice and also receive some critique from people

Dear God, do you actually answer prayers?

Yes, but only in a way indistinguishable from random luck or the result of your own efforts.
