So I write with my left hand, hold a tennis racket with my left hand, hold a glass with my left hand, and my main punching hand is my left.

Yet I play guitar with my right hand, throw a ball with my right hand, throw darts with my right hand and swing a golf club with my right hand.

So would you consider this to be ambidextrous?

I'm not sure if that's ambidextrous but, I spent a year of chemistry lessons trying to write left handed and got better as I tried. My guess is that for whatever reason, your hands have become accustomed to certain tasks.

My brother (who is right handed and doesn't play guitar) seems to think that if he played guitar he would do it left handed.

I thought being ambidextrous meant you could alternate hands on every activity and not have a preference for certain things. I'm predominantly right handed for right-handed for everything I do.

I write with my left, yet I play guitar like right-handed people do.

I'm by no means ambidextrous and neither are you.

You are ambidextrous when you can utilise both hands individually, as in not influenced by the other, naturally.

no, they'd have to be equal. to be ambidextrous you'd have to be able to swap hands on everything you listed with no effort.

No, it's not since you don't alternate between using your left and right hands for most of these activities, it's probably just how you're used to it.

Why are people suggesting you're right handed? xD You write with your left hand. That's usually the deciding factor. Lot's of lefties play guitar right handed. Other things you have just gotten used to with your right hand, but I would say you're left handed.

Likewise. If you can play guitar just as well with your right and left hand, then you're ambidextrous.

Nope. A friend of mine is ambidextrous: he can write with both hands play tennis with both hands and such. He always writes with his left hand, but can write right handed too. However, playing guitar he is a righty. He can play basic chords, but cannot play guitar left handed otherwise. It is muscle memory as much as general dexterity. if you are a player of say, 8 years on righty, you will be a beginner on lefty because you have not developed the muscle memory for the right hand to be a fretting hand when playing left handed.

EDIT: ah; i did research based on the below post: he isnt ambi; he is cross dominant.

Writing is usually the decider. If you can write with both hands (and do other things with either hand), you are most likely ambidextrous.

Oh, and it can be learned to a point. You will always lean towards your "natural hand", but you can develop ambidexterity with practice.

Lefties are more often prone to show a degree of ambidexterity. I'm a lefty and I play guitar right handed.

A person who is naturaly right handed will naturaly react to catch something with their right hand, but anything else can pretty much be a learned practice.

For instance I know a left handed drummer who plays on a left handed set up kit but who also plays guitar right handed.

He plays his kit in that manner because being naturaly left handed he assumed he'd need to learn drums left handed when he first started, but the first time he played a guitar he happened to picked it up right handed, and that's just the way he learned to play it.

Left handed guitars really are a rip off. They generaly cost around half as much again as a right handed model, but people who want to learn guitar who are left handed still buy them, because they think that's the guitar they should be playing, but the fact is, if you've never picked a guitar up in your life before, left or right handed, it makes no difference, both ways are gonna feel completely alien to you.
There really is no need for anyone to have to learn to play left handed.

I broke the middle finger on my left hand, and the whole hand had to be bandaged up. Now, I'm left-handed, and I have a teacher who requires everything to be handwritten, and I go ask her for a reprieve because I'm left handed...

... Which she doesn't grant me, says I need to handwrite, or find someone to be my scribe. So, I try to get someone to write down the ideas that come into my head, and there are big words in there; bigger than your typical seventh-grade student would know how to use. Now, a little side-story. My teacher's husband was previously in a law practice with my father and his partner, and left with some pretty bad blood left behind. My dad's also an English major, and the old partner knew that I knew how to use these words.

SHE SAID THAT BECAUSE IT WASN'T IN MY HANDWRITING, AND THAT THESE WORDS WERE FAR TOO INTELLIGENT FOR WHAT I MUST BE USING, THAT I GOT MY PARENTS TO DO THE WORK FOR ME.

And this is how I learned to write and slap bitches with my right hand.

i'm not an authority on dexterity though.

Im left handed in just about everything, just because I assumed it would feel much better I guess

I play guitar left handed, write left handed and throw left handed.

And yet if I decided to masturbate it only feels natural righty

And you can teach yourself ambidexterity; my writing with my right hand is similar to a kindergartener's which makes sense since I never use it, but its still somewhat legible. And I can brush my teeth with either hand

If you can write with either hand, then I consider you ambidextrous. You should be able to do anything with either hand, to be truly ambidextrous, I think.
#35
If you can do all of those activities with both hands as efficiently, I think that's when it's ambidextrous.
#36
I'm similar. I write left handed, play guitar left handed, throw left handed, but swing a golf club right handed, swing a baseball bat right handed, and can shoot a basketball with either. I wouldn't call myself ambidextrous though. I think I do a lot of sports related stuff right handed because that's how my dad taught me since he's right handed.

Something very similar happened to me. I broke my left hand in sixth grade, so I couldn't right. About a week later, we had a homework assignment, and had to right some short story, and it had to be hand written. So first I typed the whole thing, with my right hand, by myself, and then my mom, wrote it down. When the teacher noticed the writing, she said I didn't do any of it. Apparently disregarding the fact that I had a broken hand.

Long story short, I called her a bitch and got in trouble.

Still makes me mad thinking about it.

Oh crap that reminds me, I bat right handed... but I bat left handed too, althought right is a lot more comfortable because of how I was foolishly told "you're batting the wrong way!" by all the kids back at camp when I was 7
