I'm learning A tout le monde solo by Marty Friedman and It has this particular sweep.

eb|---------7-10-----7-10/12p9------------------9-12-11~~-|
Bb|-------8--------8-----------10------------10-----------|
Gb|-----7--------7----------------9--------9--------------|
Db|-4/9---------------------------------11----------------|
Ab|----------------------------------12-------------------|
Eb|-------------------------------------------------------|

Whats the best way to approach it and practice it?

Also, can somebody write down the picking pattern?

The first part, you want to alternate-pick and not sweep-pick. The sweep part starts at the 10/12p9 part. From there on, just play UU DDDDDUD, starting at the '10' on the Bb string.
The picking pattern in the start is just DUDUDUDU btw, starting at the 9 and ending at the 10/12.

Cheers mate that clears alot of things up. I kidna thought of alternate picking that first part too. At what tempo should I start practice?

I see no reason for not sweeping from the start

Hmm now you got me confused, what should I do?

alternate pick that first pit especially if your new to sweeping. you will most probably stumble a lot trying to do 2 consecutive down sweeps rather then ending the first lick on an upstroke.

Sweep away

Sweep it all. 4-string sweeps aren't as common as 3/5, but they're still perfectly doable

You know that u're talking to a guy that never did sweeps before. I'm wondering if this is maybe too much or this is a simple shape sweep?

Didn't know you were new to sweeps, I apologize. I'd suggest looking up the basic 3-string major, minor and diminished sweeps and practising those for a while. After that, it's just a case of adding in the extra string

sweep shapes dont get much easier then this, i find the rolling ones harder (the ones on the same fret where u have to roll your finger)

#12
sounds good man, but i would start with 3 string sweeps as mentioned above

I know I'm boring but could u write down some 3string sweeps for practice?
#14
no need man, just chop off the a and d string parts of the sweep you posted and your there!

"S" stands for slide? What's "/" then? I wouldn't pick the second note at all.

That is also a slide, he's just notating it differently to the tab.

Given the directions in the tab I would play it like this:

eb|---------7-10-----7-10/12p9------------------9-12-11~~-|
Bb|-------8--------8-----------10------------10-----------|
Gb|-----7--------7----------------9--------9--------------|
Db|-4/9---------------------------------11----------------|
Ab|----------------------------------12-------------------|
Eb|-------------------------------------------------------|

p---D/--D-D-D-U--D-D-D-U-/--P--U--U--D--D--D-D--D-U--D----

That should keep the most fluid picking motion and keep the same notes picked and hammered as marked. I don't know why you all keep adding in legato that isn't there.

I got the picking, thanks Zaphod, thats most fluid. Do you have any tips how to actually practice sweeping? Everythind I did in past like learning solos I did start slowly but I dont know how to start sweeping its like in solos u actually gradually speed up here's feeling like I don't at all.
#21
Same as ever: start slow, make sure you get it right, speed up slowly.
