I am having massive troubles with the lick in the solo wasted years. It hurts my head just looking at the tab. I usually just improvise instead of playing this part. I dont think adrian smith plays it this way however.

Thats E minor 1st position pentatonic. just improvise around it, it'll sound good.

The tab is screwed up. Just try to pick it out with your ear or improvise over that pattern.

Learn to read proper sheet music, its so much quick and easier than tabs!!

^^ This. Once you start to take into account the actual note lengths, suddenly learning solos gets much easier :P If you have GuitarPro, then the notes should just appear above the tab

I don't even see how that's possible You'd have to make up your own fingerings while with tab I can play a lot of songs prima vista. Of course I look at the note lengths from the sheet music. The problem here is that the tab TS is looking at is terrible. The solo is really inaccurate. It baffles me how songs this known are tabbed so badly.

I don't think we mean learning solely from sheet music - Just so you can look at the note lengths in conjunction with the tab. You can learn the solo from the tab, but it's very difficult to perfect the phrasing, in my opinion, without looking at the sheet music for the note lengths

I'd still call that learning from the tab. Try hiding the standard notation from GP (View -> Hide Standard Notation), it still shows the note lengths as that's something that tabulatures should include. That text tab in the original post also includes the note lengths (Q, E and S) although I admit those are harder to interpret (at least for me) since they can't be "grouped" or anything like in standard notation.

Also, I'd like to add that a great majority of Guitar Pro tabs completely neglect the standard notation by writing it all in the key signature of C major. It's very tedious to learn sheet music in the wrong key signature since you might have sharps or flats all over the place. Of course this is not a problem with proper sheet music, but those are hard to find for metal songs.

Why would you need the notation to figure out the note lengths?
Just listen to the damn song!!
