We have always been told there is no recovery from persistent vegetative state - doctors can only make a sufferer's last days as painless as possible. But is that really the truth? Across three continents, severely brain-damaged patients are awake and talking after taking ... a sleeping pill. And no one is more baffled than the GP who made the breakthrough. Steve Boggan witnesses these 'strange and wonderful' rebirths

Thought I'd share this, because I love this kind of news. Seeing progress in medicine always makes me feel happy.

Seems counter-intuitive...

Wonderful article. I had my doubts, but this actually looks legitimate. I'm happy for those people and their families. It's good that they can hopefully one day return to their lives.
I think it's time for a change.

Well...

My thoughts:

1) Are they flesh-hungry monsters who want to eat other people?
2) What about all those people who were killed?

I didn't even see that, couldn't have been major if they haven't said anything since 2006, just search it on google and look at the dates.

I saw this in a documentary last week. A young guy who suffered 2 simultaneous strokes couldn't talk or communicate for 18 months. After taking the drug he could talk pretty well, but for only an hour of so a day before the effects wore off/the sleeping pill started to work properly.
From what I've heard they're doing trials for a non-sedative version of the drug.
Pretty amazing really. Stoked for science.

I don't want to believe this.

If only because a friend of my brother was hit by a car a few months ago, spent the summer in a coma, and was recently put to rest.

It's a wonderful medical miracle and I'm happy for the families who've avoided losing a loved one, but it just hurts to think that someone I knew could've been saved, and wasn't.

Give them Viagra ass well. This is just an attempt to be able to patent the same drug twice.

You are EXTREMELY WRONG! I have played it. I own an 18W and it would be an awful stereo amp, it's way too bright, breaks up too easily and so on. Secondly, why would a guitar store sell an hifi amp.

Rigor mortis should do the same job when they finally kick the bucket.

But yeah, I was going to say "Tuesday 12 September 2006" too. I'm afraid this isn't looking like a cool new breakthrough after all.

Woah woah woah, hang on.

This is just a theory, right?

It could, hopefully, be being researched and put through clinical testing.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to put it, along with your other advice, into a book, the pages of which I will then use to wipe my ass.

Linky to tearjerking video
It's a Dutch site but the video is English.

It's about a man in a similar state who can only talk and move a bit for 1 hour a day by using Zolpidem(or stilnox) It's a sleeping pill and this fiancée noticed it had a positive effect on him and upped the dosage by 5mg and the results are marvelous.

Just watch the damn video if you have any heart at all

Shit, came here to post this.

Sachs used L-Dopa, which is a treatment to lessen parkinson's symptoms, but found that it could temporarily awaken comatose patients. It was a very heart-wrenching story, actually.

Wait. So he just woke up after being in a coma for 5 years and is talking right away?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't people in vegetative states basically braindead in the higher brain functions? As in, there's a part of their brain that's gone and can't be brought back?

Yeah they can be. Pvs is normally the result of pretty severe head trauma, in my time at the nhs we had one girl in pvs who was in a car crash and a 20something guy who had his head repeatedly stamped on in a racist attack. This is amazing if it can work but I think there are some people who have suffered too much damage to feel any effect
