Amp noob here finally in the market looking for something that will last me for a while. I've done a lot of research and read all the stickies in this forum but I would still say my guitar amplifier knowledge is limited. I thought I could post here and possible grab some advice on what to look for.

I want my budget to be $800 at most, possible more if it's well worth the upgrade. Genres I play are mainly progressive metal and death metal with a soft side for indie/ambient rock. New or used doesn't really matter for me as long as I can get something reliable and durable. I have a practice amp that I have owned for years so I am mainly looking into upgrading for jamming/small gigging purposes. I mostly play on a Schecter Diamond Series 'Raider' and am looking for an amp that can give out some brutal 'in your face' tones while retaining some pretty cleans as well.

While doing various research I stumbled upon an amp that caught my interest. I wanted to know if anyone had any opinions on the Peavey ValveKing "All Tube" 212 Combo Amp. It looks to be in my price range and fulfill everything I am looking for. I even found a gear review that seemed pretty convincing. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXVsB_bAz1I).

Sorry for all the text and thank you to whoever can help out.

Go for a used Fender Deville. It's sound great for indie/ambient stuff. Then boost the drive channels to get an even more nasty sound if need be.

Peavey XXX head with a cheap 2x12 cab. For a cab, I've seen Carvin Legacy 2x12's go for 150-200 quite a bit around here and even seen some Mesa's for 350. If you can't find a XXX head to fit your budget after getting a good quality cab then Peavey Ultra's are even cheaper. Ive seen them from 200-350. Don't cheap out on a cab. Both of those heads have all the gain you will ever need and really good clean channels for a high gain head.

All those prices are between Craigslist and guitarcenter.com used section.

Also add that I got my Carvin V3 head for 550 off guitarcenter.com used shipping and everything but it wouldn't leave you much for a cab unless you push your budget a bit. Later you might want a few effects for the ambient stuff.

that was actually a really good video. sounded surprisingly good with those crappy VK speakers. He had a weird smile when he played

Hey, welcome to GGnA

The Peavey XXX and Carvin V3 are solid recs. I owned a Valveking 112 for a while and it was OK. If you swap out the speaker, do the dummy jack trick, FX loop collapse, maybe some new tubes, etc it can sound good. I have a clip of my VK after the speaker swap and I think it had different tubes in it too.

If you want an amp that sounds good out of the box I wouldn't get a VK. If you do get a VK get the 112.

That said, with your budget you should be able to do better. I recently bought a used Peavey Vypyr 60 for $315 at Guitar Center and I really like it. Very flexible. Lots of tones to be had.

If you don't mind looking at used gear you can really step it up a notch.

holy crap - all posted in the last few days. You should have no trouble finding a kick ass amp in budget. If you HAVE to have a new amp - it will be tougher.

Good luck, and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have on these. If you are closer to Orange Co, let me know.

the ValveKing is a dedent amp for some things but it isn't very good for modern metal sounds. i use one and like it but i play 70s/early 80s style metal and hard rock and blues rock stuff.

see if you can hunt down an old 5150 combo and get an overdrive for the really heavy stuff.
