Not sure if this is the right area of forum to post in, but here goes.

I've noticed with quite a few bands there is a vocal effect where it sounds like the loudness of the vocals is overloading the mike. Some artists use it sparingly, while others do it entire songs. An example would be Hysteria by Muse


During the verse, at about 0:45 is the best example in that song. I'll add more examples when I think of them.

Can anyone tell me what is being done to get this effect?
I'll pretend I can mod your amp but break it instead.
Distortion. Cut the treble and bass.
