Anyone remember that study that supposedly concluded that bisexual men didn't exist?

Well, they did another, more accurate study recently, and, unsurprisingly, they found that bi guys do, in fact, exist.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/23/health/23bisexual.html

Well, it's nice to feel somewhat validated, although my response is more like "No shit, Sherlock."

But as two people interviewed in the article pointed out, it's still somewhat problematic.

Thoughts?

I remember scientists proving that bees can't fly.

You can prove anything if you present the facts and statistics creatively.

So you posted...why?

Anyway, wasn't the last study massively biased, gay oriented and concluded that they didn't actually know if bisexuality existed? Or am I just thinking of the thread about it

This is pretty awesome, but more effort needs to be put into assuring people that asexuals do actually exist. But I'm not entirely sure how a study like that could be done.

'We pumped them up with hormonal drugs and showed them the most statistically awesome heterosexual, lesbian and gay male porn. Despite this, none of the subjects even got the slightest bit wet or even gained a semi, which was against all expectations.'

Well, they exist... but they're not REALLY people, right?

Yeah, asexuals have it even worse than bi or pansexuals when it comes to people denying their existence.

If you can refute it, it's not a proof.

But often the only way to refute the findings of a study is by similarly deep investigation. The point is, if presented in a certain way you can get evidence to "prove" most anything.

I just tell people I'm bisexual rather asexual because it's not worth the annoyance of hearing "Oh you're full of shit. There's no such thing as asexual people olololol."

It wouldn't make sense if bisexual women existed but men didn't. Bi men can **** anything they want. Find a hole and go at it. Women have to plan things out a little more .

I don't remember the study that said bisexuality doesn't exist. Besides, I don't know how you would test it, you'd need to know if there's a sexual attraction as well as if there's a romantic attraction, just because men can give you a stiffy doesn't mean you would enjoy dating one.
I'm rgrockr and I do not approve of this message.

What I sort of mean is that really it depends how you define "prove".

I mean technically speaking in science nothing can be "proven", only proven wrong.

If taking about proof in the positive sense (ie that you've proved it correct) then that's an often subjective level of validation and people can present statistics or evidence in such a way that is seems to rationally validate a certain view.

What I mean is both refutation and proof in a practical sense are not as black and white as they appear and in fact depend massively on the people presenting those positions. "Refutation" can often boil down to simple denial, and "proof" can be simple favourable presentation of certain facts. That's why I called you up on you calling someone else up on their post.

This is a much more complicated matter (with wider scope) than you may have realised. If you wish, could maybe explain why in the philosophy thread.
