Hello, fellow UGists!
I was wondering if someone could tell me about the vocal technique used by Tom Araya, in for example "Dead Skin Mask".
When you hear him talk, you notice as the first thing that you notice is the strangeness of his voice. Its broken. But since it broke, he has still been able to play concerts and sing multilpe days in a row, so he must've found a way to be able "sing correctly".

I want to have a little background knowledge, when I confront my vocal teacher.
Can anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance

From what I've heard, he just yells. The natural tone of his voice takes over after that. He's lucky he can still sing, really. James Hetfield used to do the same thing, but he over-toured and blew out his voice. Same thing with Roger Daltrey.

If singing like that hurts, stop immediately - there is a wrong way to go about it, and it's hard to explain how to get it right. You might check into the screaming/growling thread for a start.
