Okay so play progressive music which mixes a lot of other genres such as: heavy metal, classic rock, jazz, blues, hard rock, prog metal, prog rock. I rely on a guitar for each genre I play (yeah it took me some years to get them all) but I recently created an "epic" which has all of those genres (specially hard rock, heavy metal, and prog rock) and I can't switch guitars on a gig like I would normally do...

SO THE REAL QUESTION IS: Since I can't test them (I live in Brazil), I was hoping you guys could help me decide which guitar to pick

I want a guitar VERSATILE with great sound that also LOOKS COOL (it's gonna be used for gigs after all!). Under 700 bucks (from Ebay probably) that is 6-string and I really like a tremolo (no floyd roses). And I don't actually "shred" but play pretty fast, My main influences: Dream Theater, Yes, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Rush so it's kind of a "lighter" heavy metal.

SOME OF THE CHOICES I HAVE:

Paul Reed Smith SE Mikael Akerfeldt http://www.prsguitars.com/semikaelakerfeldt/

Paul Reed Smith SE Nick Cantanese
http://www.prsguitars.com/senickcatanese/

Gibson SG Special
http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/SG/Gibson-USA/SG-Special.aspx

OR IF IT'S WORTH SAVING MORE:

Paul Reed Smith SE Paul Allender
http://www.prsguitars.com/sepaulallender/

Gibson SG Standard
http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/SG/Gibson-USA/SG-Standard.aspx

What really attracted me on the Paul Reed Smith Guitars was the beautiful design and apparently nice sound (don't know anything about prs pickups). I never had a heavy metal guitar so I don't know if EMG's are a little too heavy for what I play.

No Les Paul, Superstrats or Stratocaster shapes please!

Thank you very much, and sorry for the long text and any grammar mistakes !

Actives like EMGs are not known for their versatility and jazz. I'd suggest a versatile pup combination like JB + Jazz, looking for a good jazz neck pup and heavier bridge pup.
Guitars & Gear:
Parker Nitefly M
Sumer Metal Driver
Ibanez RGD2120Z
AMT SS-11B
Two Notes Torpedo CAB

they were invented for jazz guitarists originally.

you're not gonna want to take a dump in a gross, off-colored, vintage toilet. you want something that is white and pearly; something that shines. something that you can put your cheeks against and say, "f*** yeah"

Yeah but I only play jazz sometimes...I would like something more focused to progressive rock/metal/hard rock...and btw I use a lot of clean like Yes does (unless you only know Owner of a Lonely Heart lol)

I would pick Paul Reed Smith SE Mikael Akerfeldt
when you se Mikael playing with that guitar, you know how versatile it can be

Perhaps originally, but nowadays they're rock/metal pickups.
