Hey ppl, I just scored a TS-808 :-D

Has anyone tried one of those modded TS9 units that are getting around that claim to sound identicle to the original TS-808?

Yes, they are the same thing apart from two resistors - unless you buy into the NOS JRC4558 chip had extra mojo bollocks.

Pfffft. I have several NOS JRC4558's. I have my 4558 socketed so I can compare chips. The difference between different NOS JRC4558's was greater than the difference between any of those and cheapo generic Chinese 4558's. The Chinese ones were right in the middle of all of them.
It's all a complete load of bollocks. A 4558 is a 4558 and everything else is luck of the draw.
