Off the top of my head, I can name the following musical artists from Detriot; Eminem, ICP, White Stripes, Elzhi, Danny Brown (currently playing,) hella Motown, MC5, Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, and J Dilla. I can only name 4 from LA, and maybe 6 from NYC.

Plus they have some kickass architecture.

So does anyone know have any theories why Detroit, the depression capital of the American north, is such a cultural powerhouse?
#4
Because Detroit is awesome.

Don't remind me about it. I have to see that ****ing city everywhere I go here.

Albeit, they have to look at the even less exciting Windsor from their side, so...

Detroit's only meaningful contribution to the world was Motown. Any old asshole can manufacture cars.

Lets see.

Nas, Jay Z, Mobb Deep, The Strokes, *pause* uh, I can name a bunch of shitty punk bands, but I don't really want to count them.

I honestly can't think of any more It's probably because so many artists move there. Like TV on the Radio might sort of count, but they were just a bunch on college kids from all over the place.

Mate completley you forgot to mention Techno, House, Disco, Acid House, Juke, Ghettotek etc all of them came from there. It's like a electronic music mecca, I would love to visit thier one day.

Given time, I could probably name two or three times as many major bands from NYC as from Detroit, and just as many from LA. But I hear what you're saying.

Lemme think...

Sonic Youth
The Velvet Underground
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
LL Cool J
The Talking Heads
Living Color
Anthrax
The Strokes
MGMT
Helmet
Liars
Interpol
Blondie
The National
Jay-Z
TV on the Radio
Run DMC
Sort of Bob Dylan

John Coltrane.

Miles.

Davis.

...others I can't think of.

So there's a fair few from New York.
Money beats soul every time.

That's seriously all you can come up with? KISS? Cyndi Lauper? Anthrax? Wu-Tang Clan? The Ramones?

None of that comes to mind?

You forgot The Stooges! Also, Detroit's Death was pretty ace. Three black guys playing punk rock? You didn't see that back in the days before the Bad Brains.

Kid Rock isn't from Detroit, the small town he's from is barely part of the metro area.

But to answer your question, it's because Detroit's awesome. Also, you gotta remember that it used to be one of the largest cities in the country, so naturally it produced a proportional amount of music. As for more recently, I subscribe to the hard times = good music theory.

They called it Detroit Rock City because a kid died in a car crash on the way to a show in Detroit, I think it was on the way to the Alive! show. Also, Cadillac is KISS City USA because they came to their homecoming.

Well, yeah, he was born in Alton and died in Santa Monica, but where did he make his music? Where did he make "Miles Davis" a name that I would feel had to be typed on two lines, with periods?

Uh huh.
