I was thinking, if I am going to invest in a more expensive guitar, are the JEMs (555 isn't counted) worth the price?
I love Vai as much as anyone but I am worried that the Jems are overpriced because of the name. Would I be better off getting like a high-end RG?

The Jem has a lot of unique features, do you need them?

If not then a top end RG could be just as good for you.

Probably not, I play pretty usual stuff. I shall look into RGs.

Thats not what I meant

I mean do you like the tone of the Alder body, the different neck omfortable and the Blaze PUPs?

How about describing what you are looking for in a guitar and the price you are willing to spend?
#6
you can upgrade a high end RG to be a JEM essentially, only one current JEM model uses alder, the rest use basswood like all the RG prestiges, other than the 4570 [mahogony]

I feel they aren't terribly over priced compared to some Signature models but you can def. get a comparable RG from a prestige model as well and save some $ Though they are quite nice and amazing guitars. I think the JEM555's are a sweet deal if you can find them. it's a very close replica with a little less frill to it.

I did like the pups and the tone in general, but the neck was something I had issues with. Just didn't feel right for my hands.

Then dont buy it mate.

If you didnt like it, its damn near impossible to grow to love them

Good point. I'll look into some RGs when I have the chance.

What music do you play?
What type of guitar do you like? Explorer? Suprstrat?
What sort of bridge do you like?
Any favourite guitar necks?
Pickup preference?
Budget and location?

Punk, metal, rock.
Something in the style of JS series would be ideal. Superstrats are fine.
Floyd Rose, if possible.
C-shape is what I'm used to and comfortable with. Other than that, no idea.
No preference, I switch them quite often. (Weird habit of mine)
The budget isn't so strict. Anything from 700$ to 1500$.
I'm in Finland, the selection isn't amazing but I'll manage.

JEM 555 is shite.

I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

Are these USD or whatever currency they use in Finland (excuse my ignorance)?
And will you go new or used?

Sounds to me like a charvel would be a pretty good idea. i THINK those necks are "C" shaped... not sure on that one.

I said in USD just for convenience, we use euros.
New, if it's possible, but used ones are just fine as well.

Should have known you use Euros, European Union, duh

Anyway, personally I'd say maybe a JS1200? Maybe its just me but I've always wanted one of those

I would never pay 2k for someone else's signature model. You can get a top notch instrument handbuilt to your exact specs for less than that, and itll be your signature model and you'll enjoy it that much more.
Custom guitars, vintage amps, boutique pedals. Blah, blah, blah.

I'll keep this in mind.
