Hey guys, I'm a long time lurker and I've been fishing all around trying to find the right combo to finally bear down and put up the money for.

Budget: Under $1500 New, Under $1200 Used.

Genre: I'm a big heavy riff guy, i.e. Hard Rock to Metal. I'm down with teh br00tz, but I want to focus mostly on a thick British hi gain tone.

New or Used: I'd prefer Used under $1000 if I can, but I can do up to $1500 new if it's worth it.

Home or Gig: I'd be gigging all around with this amp. I'd hope to be able to use both on stage and at home, but I'm fine with it being solely a live amp.

Closest City: I'm located in New York City.

Current Gear: I have a PRS Custom 24 (HFS/Vintage Bass PUPs), and hope to get most of my tone going through the amp. I do have a Boss Chorus, Fulltone OCD, Ibanez TS9 and a Boss Compressor Sustatiner as well.

Amps I've tried: I've been researching for a while, and I'm liking the ENGL Screamer 50, Hughes Kettner Switchblade 100, Rockerverb 50/100, Shiva, but I'm not really sold on any of them (plus some are rather $$$). I really don't like the Mesa sound (I think it sounds like plastic and has a fake chunk to it). I generally love hi-gain boutique amps, but most of them are out my price range (Verellen, Mojave, etc.), but mainly, I'm looking for that BIG FAT hi-gain Modern Metal tube tone in a combo amp under $1500.

Any suggestions? I'd appreciate any help at all. Thanks!

Edit: After assessing a bit, I'd be OK going with a head at around $800-$1100, expecting to match it up with a 2x12 V30 cab for around $350/400.

First of all, I would like to personally thank you, and on the behalf of all of UG, for using the sticky. +1 respect.

I honestly love the Rockerverb. Which Mesas did you try out, by the way?

And its too bad that you want a combo. I think some of the Splawn heads would do you good.

The Marshall Haze combo is decent would fit the bill easily, its only 40W not sure if that will cut it you listed a lot of 100W amps, I have the 15W Haze head it has some serious gain to it, I play Slayer and it sounds raunchy as fark. It could be a bit trickier to fill the bill with just combo amps, for that kinda coin you could probably get into a used Peavey 5105 and a cab of some kind with some crafty searching.

Try an Orange TH30. At new they run just at your price range, but I'm sure you can find one used for cheap. They sell them in both combo and head versions. They're British voiced, and have tons of gain (though not overpowering, if you set the controls right.)

For ease of transportation, mainly. I considered grabbing a 2x12 mesa V30 cab for about $350, but I figure I'd save more going to a combo.

The Splawn Quickrod sounds awesome, but unfortunately it's a bit out of my price range, not to mention I'd have to get a cab as well. I never liked the gain too much of the superdrive (wasn't heavy enough!), and Marshalls somehow don't do it for me. Haven't checked out the Laney or Soldano yet. Thanks for the suggestions!

I've seen a number of threads where people were upset, so I figured I'd make this right

I loved the rockerverb head when I heard it in store, but the 2 concerns I have are the gain saturation and the weight of the bloody thing. I still might wind up with one anyway.

I've heard so many Dual/Tri recs that I'm a bit sick of the sound now, and I'd rather go with something different. It is too bad about Splawns, indeed. I wish they made the quickrod in a combo for under $1500

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

First of all, I should probably clarify a little bit by stating that I'm looking for more of a modern metal tone over the classic hard rock tone. Because of this, I'm really not a fan of Marshalls, not even the JCM 800. There's just something about them that I just don't like.

I've always been a fan of Orange, and I'm no stranger to the TH30. Unfortunately, the ones I've run into have been very unreliable (3 of the 4 I've encountered have been broken!), and I again want the massive brutal tone more than the classic sound. I still might go with a Rockerverb 50 though (lol).

I might consider a Mark IV, and I'll look into that one, thanks! As for the butcher, I've been really turned off by Peavey amps in general. I just don't think they're quality matches others in the same range (excluding the 5150, that is, which I'm impartial to as well).

Thanks for all of the suggestions guy, and I'd love to hear some more!

I love the Rockerverbs and I think those would work well for you. I also think you should try a Splawn if you can. Perfect for what you are describing. I love mine

NEW? - Have you tried an Egnater Renegade? Awesome amp and very versatile. $999 for the head and I've seen those used for $750. I really think in the end you will enjoy a head/212 set up more than a combo. The trannies in most of these amps are massive and you add that to the weight of the speakers and they are a real b*tch to move around.

Any interest in this stuff or have you already seen these?

I've played with them a lot actually, and I don't dig them too much. Not brutal enough, I guess. Also, not the most realiable amps.

The trannies in most of these amps are massive and you add that to the weight of the speakers and they are a real b*tch to move around.

You know, I might just be starting to come around here. If I do this then, I'm looking for a head in the $800 - $1000 (tops) range though.

Bruno Underground 22 combo $1400

Not heavy enough

Mesa Tremoverb 212 $1000

I really dislike the sound of these. Too digital/plastic sounding, even though I love the fullness of the tone

Tempting, but I really just don't like Marshalls. I'm picky as hell, what can I say.

Hughes & Kettner Trilogy head $850
http://newyork.craigslist.org/brx/msg/2594334840.html
Most interesting choice here, but unfortunately this example needs repaired tubes, which worries me. Nevertheless, I like this head a bit and might consider it!

Nay.

Orange Rockerverb head $1250
http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/msg/2602012667.html
I can get a new one for less...and I might just pull the trigger on it, but we'll see.

Marshall JVM 205 combo $1000

Nay.

Orange Rocker 30 combo $900
http://newyork.craigslist.org/jsy/msg/2597913757.html
I noticed this one myself, I'd consider it, but it's 1x12 and a bit much for a 30w amp. I'd get a rockerverb 50 instead if I went the orange combo route.

I'd be all over that Tremoverb, Trilogy and Rockerverb.

I looked into and responded to each suggestion you made. Thank you so much for taking the time to make that list! Unfortunately I don't think those are what I'm looking for however. I'm really looking for that big brutal sound, but one that's super-duper FAT (not necessarily big bottom end, as that can sound rather flubby) and CHUNKY. Thanks again guys!

Well buying new doesn't mean the amp won't have a problem and buying used doesn't man there exists a problem, or ever has.

the very best of luck to you in your amp search.

fwiw i searched for a used peters head in the places they typically show up but none were available at the moment.

eh...Baron K88 maybe. Or a Pitbull UL

I appreciate both of you taking the time to help me find a good solution. Unfortunately, I'm still on the search. The ones I've narrowed it down to are: Mark iii/iv, Engl Screamer, Rockerverb 50, or possibly a hughes and kettner model.

or the nitro (also kt88) and it has ball busting bass and low end and stays nice and clear.

Alright guys. I confess. You guys win (Raijouta, 311 and Trashed). I was essentially dead set on a Mark iii Red Stripe, but then I heard this demo of the Splawn Quick Rod: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFjKOpXLlRM, and considering I ma playing a PRS Custom 24 myself, I am completely sold. This sounds so damn thick, heavy and creamy, while still having enough gain on it. I want one. I want one now. I've searched Craigslist and such but I haven't found anything. Where do I go about getting one cheap?

Im gonna actually suggest a peavey 6534+. i got mine for 1200$ brand new, and if you look carefully you might be able to find a mesa 2x12, or a new avatar 2x12 fro your budget.

the 6534+ sounds alot better than a 6505 IMO, and I prefer it over the bogner shiva I tried my Cu24 through when i bought my PRS. the only somewhat downside is that the clean channel is better than the 6505+ but still nothing to ride home about. on the other hand, I just realizes today, it has a FANTASTIC crunch mode and when you add a tube screamer to it, its a pretty versatile amp. If you try it out, dont try it out expecting a 6505, its along similar lines, but different enough to be called a different amp. Or maybe you should, to realize how much better it is
#29
Just my 2 cents..
Don't rule out a Randall MTS amp..I know many of the Randall amps are sheer crap. but the MTS series allows you to use any preamp you want to get YOUR personal sound. I have my stuff heavily modded, and I can tell you from personal experience...the MTS amps can serve you well. Or ignore me, and look at Micheal Wegner (producer of many, many succesful Metal bands..) he has an entire "Rack of Doom"..which is nothing but Randall MTS stuff.
Don't knock it till you try it. You can hear clips and learn more over at the MTS forum (also called grail tone).

PS: if your amps never seem THICK enough, make CERTAIN you have the right guitars and pickups!!!!

A head and 212 is much easier to cart around than a combo. I have a 115 combo. Its about 90 pounds, and is absolute murder to get up and down the stairs.

Grab that Splawn you like and buy a whitebox 212 for about 300 dollars.

anyway I would be recommending a 5150/6505+ combo
you can save a lot if you get it used.

get a used 5150 then get a 2x12 cab with v30s in it
packs a lot of mids and thickness at least for me.
