Sorry if there have been hundreds of these threads (I'm sure there has).

I started playing bass about 6 months ago and bought a beginner's bass and amp, but I'm looking to get some better equipment.

What bass/amp would you recommend for a beginner mostly interested in playing punk/metal?

I'm hoping to spend about $700.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Squier Vintage Modified P bass $279

Ampeg Portaflex 350 $219(like new/sctarch n dent) or Hartke 2500 $249(scrach n dent)

Peavey headliner 2x10 cab $199

All these prices are from zzounds.com and bring you in right at your $700 limit.

The Squier VM P bass is a really nice bass with better than average pickups for its price range.
The Hartke would be my choice out of those heads, because of the eq options. But ether will allow you to add another cab besides the 2x12 eventualy for more sound. Maybe a 1x15 cab latter on for better lowend response.

Used gear.

In my opinion, it's completely worthless to be buying new gear, until you get to the $800-$1000+ mark.

For $700, buying used will get you a significantly nicer equipment than spending it in, say, Guitar center.

Before you are lead into believing this, a 1x15 cab does not necessarily have a better low end response than a 2x10, infact, the majority of 2x10 cabinets will go lower frequency wise than the equivalent 1x15, so don't fall into the trap of thinking so.

If you want to add an extra cab later on, which you will likely do as a 2x10 isnt always loud enough, i suggest adding a 2nd cab the same as the first, so you have a matching pair. That way you know what your tone will be like when you add the extra, and don't need to EQ everything to taste again.

As for the gear you should use, those are very good suggestions, as is buying used. I can't give you any ideas myself, as i'm from the UK and don't know about US pricing, but you will not go wrong with a Squier, i frequently gig a Squier Deluxe Jazz V with no problems whatsoever.

heres your first problem. since you so graciously decided to spam the forum with the same thread thats been posted over a million times, but were to lazy to search for, expect nothing from this post.

i do believe i hate you, i hope you dont live anywhere near me, i hope you dont vote in elections and i hope you dont have children. this last point is probably a bit futile on my end, you will be too lazy to look for your children and insist to your equally lazy wife that you have no children and then youll have more. so, sorry to say you will be heavily populating the world for a short time, but none will survive past infancy due to your lazy neglect. i do declare you a nuisance.

EDIT: these are all within the first 4 pages:
