I'm lookin for a small amp that could fit in my dorm room that still has a clean sound. What would yall recommend? This is also gunna be my first amp. I have a PRS SE Torero if that makes any significant difference. I'll be playing some Gary Hoey type stuff.

Thanks,
Jordan

None. Get a Line 6 POD HD and use it with headphones and a set of computer speakers. An amp would cause way too much trouble, regardless of the wattage and level you operate it (noise won't even be the main issue; your neighbors will go batshit just over the fact that you simply own a guitar amp and electric guitar). Wait until you're out of college before you get a true amp.

id recommend you skip an amp and buy a multifx pedal with some nice headphones. An amp used just in a dorm room situation is unrealistic. or if you have a laptop get yourself a cheap interface with a DAW (audacity/reaper) and use free VST plugins. but if you had to have an amp id suggest a moddeler of some sort. ie vyper/flextone

but here are some links for multifx:

guitar rig or amplitube for pc, with high quality headphones. Also a pedal like the line 6 pod, or a digitech multifx pedal. An amp with any size speakers will make your neighbors paranoid.

I would agree with iheartgun that you would do better with a multi fx with headphones or a good interface. I would suggest the Vox JamVox as a good computer interface (and they are $75 at guitar center on sale right now) or else a Vox ToneLab ST as the multi fx.

i used a Peavey Bandit 112 with a Zoom G2 as my dorm room set up. no one ever complained. most people would stop and listen actually. as long as you dont blast it when people are trying to sleep, or depending on the kind of people in the dorm, you should be fine. I happened to live in a dorm with mostly musicians haha. Just be respectful, keep it low, and dont jam at like 2 am and you shouldnt have any problem using say, a 5 watt tube amp

I'm using my Line 6 Spider in my dorm and nobody really cares that I play it. Just putting that out there.

Thanks for the reply's. I guess I'll go with some type of multifx and a good pair of headphones. I might go to guitar center and check come stuff out. I don't have near enough cash money yet for that Boss GT 10. Is there something cheaper that yall would recommend so I could compare some stuff?

The digitech rp355 and the zoom g3 are both great units and are $200 new.
Guitars: Fender FSR Standard Strat, Squire Affinity Strat, Epiphone Nighthawk
Amps: Vox AC15C1, Roland Cube 15x, Peavey KB-1
Pedals: Digitech RP355, HD500, Joyo AC-Tone, EHX Soul Food

there are thousands more, these seem to be some the most popular, cheap but decent multi-fx. happy hunting!

good headphones make a huge difference. spend >$100 and there are a ton of killer options. i have some Senhousers that i bought like 7 years ago, i dont remember the model (and they aren't here atm, but they were the brand that impressed me most. i am sure things have changed at least somewhat since then though.

Actually, thats a good point. Will you be playing anywhere besides your dorm? That could change things alot.

Well, what is your housing situation? If you're going to a school that has super tiny dorm rooms and will be living in a very large housing complex, then I'd go with as little amp as possible.

Personally, I go to a school with fairly spacious rooms and a small housing unit. My RA plays through a Vox AC15 in his room and routinely plays it pretty loudly during daytime hours. I'll soon have a similar setup, only with either a Marshall Class 5 or a Blackheart Little Giant with it.

Really the best thing you can do, if you want to play though an amp, is to make friends with your RA. If they like you, then they won't be bothered about complaints from others about you being noisy if you are doing it outside of quiet hours.

my budget's around 200. I was lookin at the Line 6 POD 2.0 and the the POD floor 2.0 as mentioned by iheartgun. The rooms pretty small so a multifx pedal or something would be perfect. I'll basically just be playing inside my room.

another option that works quite well for practice and to record your own music is to get a decent interface for your computer and download free amp sims. some of the amp sims are pretty good and sound quite nice plus most interfaces are realitively cheap and come with a DAW like cubase or protools. you can also download reaper for free. but here are some interfaces.
line6 ux2 with pod farm
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/line-6-pod-studio-ux2-with-pod-farm
avid recording studio
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/avid-recording-studio
lexicon lambda with cubase le4
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Lexicon-Lambda-USB-Desktop-Studio-103725602-i1126258.gc
lexicon alpha with cubase le4( this is what i use. and it works great)
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Lexicon-Alpha-USB-Desktop-Recording-Studio-103840849-i1126259.gc

and here are some vst downloads if you are interested in going this rout.
http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com/
http://sites.google.com/site/nickcrowlab/7170-Lead
http://www.voxengo.com/product/boogex/
http://www.asio4all.com/
(if you run an asio based interface get the asio4all plugin. no more latency)

there are tons more but these ones are pretty good. the computer vst rout is pretty cool and you can get some good tones out of it. which ever way you go multi-fx or VST amp sims are both great.

Get a Vypyr 15 for $99. You can still play it with your headphones. Clean sound is very good and high gain stuff is excellent. It has 13 built in effects and 13 amps (clean and dirty for each).

Why would you pay $200 for a $70 Pod 2.0? Do you live in the US? Far better options for $200. The RP355 and Zoom G3 as mentioned before are two good ones.
#24
if you get the rp355 or g3, youd have to do with some crappy headphones until you can afford some good ones in the $100 range. When buying the headphones make sure its something good like the ATH A500 or the hd280

I was just browsing on Guitar Center and it has the POD 2.0 for $200. The RP355 was another I'm lookin at. I'm gunna go into guitar center this weekend and try some of these suggestions out. Yea, I'm in the US.

Wait... wait... wait...!!!

You guys are telling me I can buy a Line 6 HD-500 pod, hook headphones up to it and it will work (with all the amp modellings and dealies?) Has anyone done this – how do it sound compared to hooking it up to a sweet tube?

This is getting me slightly excited (in the crotchal region)…
#27
All multifx work like that with headphones. It works fine. Many of the recordings in my link were recorded directed into a recorder monitored with headphones. If you plan to record your multifx then you should tweak your tones with headphones or studio monitors.
