Hi there

Heres a pole for all you men made of metal.

I am really curious to see how this poll will result.

So, the question is:

'How do you have the mids on your amp?'

Bands like Metallica and Anthrax popularized the low/ scoop mids guitar tone in the 80's, but at the exact same time Megadeth nd Iron Maiden were matching their success with their own slightly enhanced mids sound.

But what do you guys do?

Also, could you say what kind of metal you like to play most in the comments, along with any other key details like tuning you use.

I'll start by saying I like to play thrash, with lots of solos, but also melody lines and harmonies. I play in E standing and keep a nice amount of mids in my tone.

Mids, it's just common sense for **** sake. You wouldn't scoop out all the bass on a bass amp would you?

I max my mids on my amp then I boost them with my 10 band eq

I scoop it ever so slightly, but my amp is kinda a beefed up jcm800, so i got some midrange to play with
I'm just a kickin' and a gougin' in the mud and the blood and the beer.

I use a touch of mids for my heavier tones, but it also depends on the amp I'm using.
Guitars: Fender FSR Standard Strat, Squire Affinity Strat, Epiphone Nighthawk
Amps: Vox AC15C1, Roland Cube 15x, Peavey KB-1
Pedals: Digitech RP355, HD500, Joyo AC-Tone, EHX Soul Food

Scooping mids is a noobz way of getting what they think is good tone. Then they develop an ear and turn em up. I pretty much followed this mentality.
#14
Depends, if you're playing by yourself, mids at 4, bass higher, in a band, good luck being heard with no mids.

Mids are the most important frequency to the guitar, so ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS mids, if someone doesn't use ANY mids at all, they're just idiots

I LOVE a bass full guitar tone, so I like to scoop them ever the slightest.

Though, I have a Peavey Vypyr 15 for a amp. :P

Kinda depends on the amp...

Scooping on something like a 5150 or a Mark IV isn't really scooping, those amps have tons of mids. I have the mids on my 5150 at 4 and it cuts through a mix better than most amps would with them dimed. On the other hand, my Herbert has the mids cranked pretty high, but I also use the mid cut feature most of the time to even them out a bit and bring teh br00tz

I usually boost my mids a little. But sometimes I'll use an eq to take out some low mids, or high mids. Depends on what amp I'm playing/what tone I'm going for.

Stupid poll is stupid. Depends on the amp, on what you're playing, on the rest of your gear, on where you are playing, on if you are playing other people and what instruments they are playing, etc.

I leave my mids around 3 on my 6505+ for metal tones. If I am playing with others I will usually increase them a a bit to cut through the mix, but generally I like a scooped tone.

on comment i have though about scooping mids (which i will admit i was guilty of until i was 17-18), but a lot of the older metal i was into was more on the scooped side, and gradually increased to metal being played with more and more mids as the "new wave of american metal" bands came out. i almost would argue it was a trend in tone.

everything is in flux.

i do now know i will never go back to low mids. i have them boosted in most of my amps.

I bet you can't cause of all the time you spend on UG.

It really depends on what I'm going for.

It depends on what sort of tone i'm looking for.

My amp is pretty Midrangey, right now mine is just above 4/just under 5. I like a beefy low end sound, I use the mid knob to slightly colour the sound.

I boost the shit out of my mids. If anything I scoop some of the high end off so it's not piercing. Admittedly I don't play metal much and when I do its really only early stuff (Sabbath, AC/DC, and Cream with some extra distortion) but I still get some heavy tones that'd be mud with different eq.

Pretty much this. It depends on so many factors. If I'm playing some ordinary rock and roll anything with a lower level of gain, then I tend to keep my mids at about 11/12 o'clock on my amp. If I play something heavier, then I use an EQ to scoop out some of the high mids, while boosting the lower lows and lower mids. It's impossible to have one setting for everything.
