Well, I've been playing through a Fender '65 Reissue Twin Reverb for a few months now. And I've been through quite a few pedals that gave it some good gain. But it always lacked something. I went on the quest for good deals.

Today I went to jam with my buddy and ended up trading my Twin and a Vintage Black EC-1000 for this beauty.

Series II Single Rectifier Solo Head. Came with a really nice Mesa head cover. As well as that Mesa 3/4 closed back 2x12 with their Black Shadows in it.

The cab sounds HUGE. Perfect cab. I really have nothing but great things to say about it.

The Single Rec is a lot more versatile than I thought. I really love the cleans I've dialed in and it seems to handle my Verbzilla really well. So I'm pretty happy with that. My musket fuzz sounds HUGE through this as well. It's just all win.
The "pushed" setting on the clean channel is really nice as well. I had no expectations, but I really like it. I can see it being used a lot.

The second channel is pretty rad. I'm not a huge fan of the "Raw" setting. Can't dial anything in that doesn't sound muffled.
The "Vintage" setting is my favourite. Very balanced, can get really head or nice crunch. It's pretty versatile in itself. The "Modern" setting is pretty br00tal. hahaha. It's hard not to play heavy shit using it.

Next. I was doing my usual craigslist browsing and found a head that I have been interested in for a very long time. The guitarist from HIM Mikko Lindstrom gets insanely great tone from it. And Peter and Mikael from Opeth have used them.
I wasn't really looking to purchase a new amp but this badass came up at an impossibly low price with NOTHING wrong with it!

I picked this mofo up at only $300!!!!!

It was soooo insane that I got such a nice deal on it. I've seen them go for much more used and when they were new they went for $15-$1600.

Very happy with it. The clean and the reverb are great. Sounds really crisp. Gets some nice low gain stuff. Then when you kick on the gain channel with the extra gain stage you get some of the Heaviest br00tz sounds ala Baroness and Mastodon. It's perfect for that kind of metal. It's an insane head. It's also pretty massive. hahaha

I'm very happy with these deals.

What do you guys think?

Do I win at mapz?

The EC-1000 was rubbish MClaw. And the twin was okay. But I got it for nothing. Couldn't justify it. And Singles go for $700-$900 all day around here.

Ec-1000's sell for nothing.

In good condition, the Twin is worth about the same as the Recto head, maybe even more, and I usually see the EC-1000s going for ~$500. Since you didn't pay much for the gear though, it's a win-win for you, since I assume you don't play much genres that the Twin is used for, if you traded it for a Recto

Everything you just said is worthless in Australia.

Thanks Ippon.

And MClaw. Twins go for super cheap man. Haha. You can't sell a '65 reissue over $600 to save your life. And mine was brand new.

The EC is not in good shape. Had a ****ed up jack and dents and wasn't all that nice. I definitely made out. The Single Rec is the old one too. I've read that they are way nicer than the newer ones. It still has the 1/4" footswitch.

I don't know how much better the quality really is. But people on the web seem to think they are nicer.

It's got great cleans. The reverb is at least usable. The low gain seems to be pretty decent. The higher gain stuff is nice and it can also do br00tz pretty well. I think mine needs different tubes. It's got groove tubes and I think it's biased kind of hot. It get noisy. I was told better tubes and a good bias will help. Wish I could bias an amp myself though. I don't really have a good amp tech close.

If you end up keeping teh VH mapz let me know I can probably help a bit in this department.

Groove Tubes are not THAT bad.

A 'hot' bias will not necessarily make your amp noisy. A 'hotter' bias might make it seem a bit muddy or warbly (like a cross-over distortion type sound). A 'cold' bias will make it seem a bit stiff and thin. Somewhere in the middle is the sweet spot.

If you have noisy tubes it may actually be the preamp tubes. That is an easy fix. You can start by swapping some of those around and see if the tone changes for better or worse. Start by swapping V1 and V2. You can actually do this while the amp is turned on as long as you are wearing good gloves. I don't actually recommend that I'm just sayin'

Can you tell me more about how you go about biasing this amp so I don't have to look it up. Does it have test points or a bias trim 'dial' on the back?
#35
can't bias it unless it is modded.

or need a bias meter plug in thingy.
