So I am in an emoish band that sounds sounds sort of like Sparta or Circa Survive or something and we've been working on new music and a lot of the songs we've been writing include guitar solos (kind of ass-rockin' guitar solos with bends and stuff) and straight up jammy sections. I like it in our band and I think the guitarists do the solos well but when I try to think as an emo listener I am unsure if I would be stoked about that stuff because I have never heard bands do anything like this.

So my questions are: Does this sound like it could be a cool dynamic for a band or would it be something that would turn you off? Do you know of any examples of bands using ideas similiar to this?

I don;t think so, Ive found most people who listen to real emo (whatever that term means) to be really open minded and people that have roots in a lot of genres...so I don't think so.

I know that's probably not what you're directly looking for, but I would take a cue from these guys and lace your music with crazy awesome guitar parts. Also, you're like the only person to ever site Sparta as an influence, which I appreciate.

I remember that, because you brought the band to my attention.

I hate guitar solos. However, I enjoy the lead guitar in La Dispute's stuff.

*Prepares to be bricked by emos*
My Chemical Romance, the Black Parade. That had a few soloish sections.
Just be unique, and you'll be able to express yourself, people like that.
Basically every guitar driven major genre (not the 100's of subgenre's you can make up) have guitar solos in some way.

Oh, you mean rock? Rock is the only guitar driven genre that isn't one of 100s of subgenres. I'd think it's safe to assume most rock doesn't actually have guitar solos (if we're not counting melody reprises and/or riffs as solos).

Does this make any kind of sense? If so, what is it?

It's written in a sarcastic tone, so I could understand how you'd get confused. I haven't seen you around so my first assumption is that yer dumb.

EDIT: It's so much easier just to do this.

Which is why I said lead guitar to differentiate between the two...

Thanks man! I'll tell him you said that. He is also the singer/one of the guitarists in the band I started this thread about but really wants to get a lead singer because he is self-conscious about his singing ability.

Nah dude, tell him his voice rocks, its so raw and full of emotion. Its just so real and expressive! I don't want to sound like some pathetic loser but Ive been listening top your EP all week...good good stuff.

I love tasteful solos for the record and theres some solos in that genre/weird line between pop punk and emo.

It's a species of bird that was indigenous to the LA strip in the early 1980s, unfortunately their nest was raped and pillaged by a group of men in leather pants and eye shadow

Emo bands play what they feel like and they think is good, not what other bands/people play or think is good.

Anyway if I remember it right 1000 travels of jawaharlal uses solo's sometimes and I think they're quite awesome.

Call it lead or solo, regardless of the name it's still a good song and it has emo written all over it.
