So the other day I was in my local Music Go Round when something caught my eye. I gave it a whirl and fell in love. For $450, I couldn't pass it up. Plus it came with the original case!

(sorry for the shitty cell phone pics...)

Ovation? The makers of fine acoustic electrics?

Yep, that's the classic Ovation headstock (no truss rod cover though )

But what's this? That's not something that's usually on an acoustic...

It's an Ovation Preacher! I tracked the serial number and this beast came from some point between 1976 and 1979.

One piece mahogany body, MIA, ebony fretboard, 24.75" scale length, 24 frets, 10" fingerboard radius and two "double coil" pickups. The first thing I noticed about this guitar was the tone. It has a surprisingly bright tone, but still has some thickness to it. The frets have some wear and the body has some nicks and scratches, but that's just mojo The pickups are kinda odd - they're smaller than regular PAF-style humbuckers but still kick out a good signal. This guitar fits right between my Ibanez AS73 and Tele in terms of tone - it's brighter and more articulate than the Ibanez but not as twangy and thin as my Tele. Plus, it's my first vintage guitar

I think I've only seen one other user on here mention having one, so it's kinda cool to have something so unique. It's like an SG and a Strat had a baby.

Thanks guys. The only thing I'd change is maybe slightly larger frets, but otherwise I'm really happy with it

Freaking awesome. I learned to play on my Dad's Ovation UKII. Amazing guitar with great tone and action. It's too bad ovation quit the electric guitar game because they were amazing.

I know, man. I didn't even know they made solidbodies until after I saw Josh Homme from QOTSA playing one, then I did some research and found out how awesome their whole lineup was supposed to be. Then years passed without me being able to play one, until the other day. Needless to say, it lived up to the hype.

Sweet find. Solid body Ovations are highly under rated.

I prefer "special"

I forgot to add that it has two output jacks- one mono and the other stereo. I wish I had a good stereo setup, but for now I think I'm just gonna run it with a scooped fuzz through my Fender and a really middy overdrive on my Jet City and see how that sounds

You are what they call a “rhythm guitarist”. While it's not as glamorous as playing lead you can still get laid. Especially if you can sing and play.

In the end, the only question is: what bass would Jesus play?

I think he's a Fender Jazz guy.

It's an Elliott Smith song lyric I dunno what was going through his heroin-addled mind when he wrote it, but I like the song lol.

Thanks for commenting, everyone!

First up... Congrats on a very nice Preacher. They are well known over at the Ovation Fan Club site. If you have any questions on it, they can surely help.

Did a quick look at Gruhn Guitars inventory list. They have a near mint Preacher in stock... $1000. You did good.

Eh mine is missing a trussrod cover and one of the screws on the bridge isn't original, plus it has a few nicks and dings so it's not really near mint but I still think I got a good deal. I'm happy with it, and that's what matters. I'll have to check out the Ovation Fan Club, too.
