i was just wondering what size amp is necessary to do the job for band practice..

A 30 watt or larger solid state should do for band practice.
Although I bet someone will go "lol nah" and correct me. But that always surficed when I used to be in a band with an extremely loud drummer in a small recording studio room.
There's a good chance that what I've written above is useless and if you take any of the advice it's your own fault.

A good efficient speaker will always help your cause as well.
