Dear ol Kensai got me thinking about countries, nationalism, and immigration on a broader sense, on the world level - something that needs to be talked about and perhaps reformed entirely in our lifetimes.

What's your take on the traditional idea of a country (a territory with border restrictions marking people inside the border as people belonging to the country and people outside as aliens lol) continuing to exist as it has? Does it still work for the 21st century? Does nationalism, factional separation, and immigration still hold given that we have an increasingly globalized world now? Protecting your territory aint nothing new - it's a built-in measure in a lot of animals. But unlike our fellow animals who have long had the privilege of moving about freely for whatever reason (I still wave to the geese flying south every year), we impose silly restrictions on ourselves.

Restrictions are obviously needed to curb the competition of resources. Past basic needs, all a person needs to learn now is an internet connection.

Look at this website:

http://www.khanacademy.org/

Now look at this:

http://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm

Should we continue operating as distinct countries with nationalism and immigration law? Should humans have the freedom to go wherever they please without the fear or consequence of being imprisoned?

What say ye, Pit?

Yes, we should have nationalism and national borders.

...modes and scales are still useless.

I havn't clicked the links, havn't got the time.

IMO, there's only 3 ways to have fully coherent immigration policy worldwide:

-No immigration is allowed anywhere
-Countries only allow in exactly what they need, no more.
-Completely open borders.

All countries would need the same policies, IMO open borders would be best.

Countries need to exist, because one group of persons will not want to be subject to the same laws as another group of persons.

I see no reason why it couldn't operate on some sort of level as the states within the US though. They all have their own distinct laws, but you are free to move between them however you like.

I basically agree with this. Countries should exist if anything for simple geographical purposes.

Also because I love the world cup.

I think that countries aren't really needed. I mean, a government and such yes to prevent everyone from killing each other, but some places like North America and Europe could do just fine as just a continent and not individual countries.

Absolutely agree with Dirge and yourself. World collaboration is at such a higher pace now than it was ten years ago that it doesn't make sense for such disparate standards to coexist and fuck people over for simply being born at the wrong place at the wrong time.

But would a world government work with complete standardization, or would it lead to bigger problems than distributed governance?

What if we made Earth into a giant country? We could made a system of government that most people agree with (through compromise) and we had politicians that weren't corrupt.

I think it will take awhile. Government in general even down to the local level is messed up now, so imagining a global collective being sucessful is laughable. But the internet is an amazing thing, now the average person can talk with people halfway across the globe and that breaks down years of stereotypes and xenophobia. With time I think it is entirely possible to see some form of open borders sentiment.

I hope something is done in the future, I find it silly to have to pay as much as I do right now to get a passport, just to go to another place on this rock we all call home.

Let everyone embrace commonly accepted international rules and norms on things like human rights and democracy. Let other nations develop economically (I'm looking at you, BRICS, and Mexico, and South Korea, and Turkey) and let the world become more multipolar. No longer dominated by the US but adhering the Western international order with all of its rules and institutions established over the last century. Let increased trade and complex interdependence flourish. Then nations may become less and less important. And it only makes sense, if you're promoting a free trade regime, that you should eventually facilitate a more free movement of people too.

It's a known fact humans are a parasitic species. Use up all the resources in a particular land, move to another land, war, use all the resources from the usurped land, rinse then repeat. In reality, if we removed the institution of borders, people would just move to the most resource rich lands and fight over them.
I wish the world was all daisies and cakes, but it's actually not.
