I'm doing abit of work on the Sex Pistols for my historical context course and I thought I'd ask the pit if they can give me any interesting pieces of information about them.

The topics are:
Religion
Historical Context (Important events at the time)
Decade (Any specific points in time that are worth looking up)
Fashion
Politics
Social Status (This applies to the fans aswell as the band)
Class system
Musical Style

I already have a few points on each of these but I never really knew much about the Sex Pistols themselves so I wouldn't know about some 'hidden gem' moments in their history.
Links would be a big help

Btw, don't bother posting irrelevant stuff, I'm checking these facts thoroughly.

Just any kind of information on those topics that have some relevance.
Seriously, aslong as it's relevant to the Sex Pistols (especially the late 70's) it should be good.

Like I said, I'm checking what people say.

The topics are:
Religion - Atheist most likely
Historical Context (Important events at the time) - Thatcher.
Decade (Any specific points in time that are worth looking up) - late 70s.
Fashion - Punk
Politics - Pretty sure they didn't want the Tories.
Social Status (This applies to the fans aswell as the band) -
Class system - Not high, I know that much.
Musical Style - Punk...

I didn't consider Thatcher, I thought she was prominent in the 80's

IIRC, she came into power about 75? The same year Sex Pistols formed. Might need to check up on that.

EDIT: I was very wrong, it was '79. Disregard that then.

So far I only have to write a 500-word essay on this stuff. Pretty small stuff tbh.
I should have enough to write a decent 500-word essay but it'd be nice to throw out a fact about the band that the lecturers don't know

Really though, Sex Pistols are a pretty poor choice considering they were only around for 4 years and brought out a single album.

John Lydon went for his audition in Malcolm Mclaren's SEX shop and they asked him to sing Rod Stewart's Maggie May, and he told them to **** off and sang something else.

I think this is right, but maybe I've mixed up names or something so verify it first.

I wasn't around when the Sex Pistols were big so I don't really have much of a connection to them (their music is okay but I prefer other stuff). From what I've been reading they have really broken alot of barriers.

This is one of those cases where I like the musician but I don't like the music
Still, it never hurts to atleast listen to something you don't like atleast once.

Really? It's the complete opposite for me. I can't stand John Lydon but I like Sex Pistols.

John Lydon said that he does what he wants

I didn't actually watch the IaCGMooH with him in it, but the butter adverts did make me think 'wait a minute'.
I guess that's just John Lydon being John Lydon. Some of the stuff he says/does can be abit annoying but he seems genuine most of the time and unpretentious.

Actually, I read somewhere that he was just doing those butter adverts to raise money to record the new PIL album. Yeah, I suppose he's alright. Still, personal issues aside, he's a pioneer.

Yep. It is coming out this spring. I think PIL is way more interesting anyway. John Lydon is a lefty by the way.

Sex Pistols were the first boy band experiment. Totally manufactured by Malcolm. Sid did'nt even know how to play the bass. Most of the time he just jumped around and spit on the crowd. As far as I know he never even actually recorded anything with them. It was all done by someone else in the studio.

As for Political things, there was something about them renting a house boat and playing God Save The Queen at ear shattering levels, near Buckingham Palace during some festivities for the Queen.
YA GOTTA HIT IT ON THE ONE
