Yesterday, we had a Thanksgiving dinner at my friend's house (Canada). It was just a chill time and we had a few good laughs. Everyone's just being goofy and cracking inside jokes.

I realized that a few of our jokes would be considered very sexist, racist, and homophobic. And it's weird because even though I am for gender, racial, and sexual equality, I still find these jokes extremely funny. The problem is, the more we laugh at them, the more we feel it is ok to laugh at them.

I don't think any of my friends would claim they are sexist, racist, or homophobic either. So I wonder...

Am I guilty of being discriminatory? Is the only reason that I am pro-equality is because I want to be socially progressive, but I don't actually believe it?

Do you guys laugh at things you know you shouldn't?

Lots of racist jokes, lots of homosexual jokes and lots of bird jokes.
But it's still as much fun to point the joking finger at myself too: so there's a wealth of man jokes (about how crap we are), fat jokes, humour about how the british do stupid things and so on.

As long as you can take it in good grace, who is harmed

"Why shouldn't you put your hand in a jar full of jelly beans?"
"Because a black one might steal your watch"

People who laughed at that were deemed to be racist.

I think if you actually were racist or something it wouldn't be as funny.

Your friend's house is Canada?

Anyway yeah, I may do non-PC jokes with friends and think it's ok, even though I don't stand for those ideological ideas. Because they're jokes, not manifestos.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. Maybe I am racist. But I support racial equality .

You're not racist. They are just jokes.

I don't think you understand that everyone does this.

it's only funny when it's clever, that is just stupid^.

They're called jokes for a reason. You're not taking it seriously, therefore you aren't racist, sexist or whatever.

The reason they're funny is because they're jokes. You aren't being serious. If any of your friends were serious, I doubt you'd be hanging out with them. And you're not intending to offend anyone else, so don't worry.

As soon as something becomes regarded as "untouchable" from humour, everyone is a hypocrite.
I can understand people not finding things funny if it affects them on a personal level, and it's obvious where insults are thrown around...but nothing can't be laughed at.

Yup. Lots of sexual jokes, and a few black jokes with some of my closest friends

oh man, same here.

Along the way, we'll stop and say "oh man, this is so bad we're being too racist". And then we laugh and continue.
