What is one supossed to do when the tab tells you to 4^0, how would you hammer-on a open string?

Give us a tab with that in it so we can use it as an example. It could be a pull off or a slide. Def not a hammer on.
There's a good chance that what I've written above is useless and if you take any of the advice it's your own fault.

Sounds like a pull off. Wouldn't be a slide though, unless you pulled off at the first fret.

Actually yeah, most likely a pull off.

Still pull offs. As a rule, if the first number is higher, it's going to be a pull off.
