Hey guys, I am asking about a guitar for my friend.

He acquired a

1957 Fender Mustang with a natural finish.
It's in mint condition, original case and he thinks even the original strings.
It also has the paperwork with it.

Do you guys know anything about these and their value?
He asked at Guitar Center and they offered him like $500 and he said no way.
Then the guy told him the last one they sold went for around $2,200.

Just trying to get him some more information on what its worth and all that.

Thanks in advance for any help!

HILT!

Where's Waldo?

He'll probably get the best deal on eBay. Sorry, I don't know how much it's worth.
#4
I asked for pics but it's at his parent's house.
I can't even find any info on them!

All I know so far is natural finish.

Found something finally.

I am assuming it looks like this, just a 1957 instead of that being a 1977

Mustangs didn't come in natural in 57. You could have Red, White, or Blue. We'll need more pictures and information, but I'm skeptical that it's what he thinks it is.

Also, that's not natural. That's called Antigua and was not introduced until much later - 1977 like you found looking for one.

I wonder if he doesn't remember the year.
I told him to read the paper when he can.

When did they come natural if at all?

For all I know he could have read it wrong, or he said he has no idea where his bro got it but its possible it could have been stripped. which if so probably renders it rather worthless :p

So really what we have is second- or third- hand hearsay on what may not be a sort of old, possibly refinished, Mustang. Until you can get pictures of the guitar and documentation, we can't do anything but speculate.

Natural was a Mustang finish, started in 1972. There will of course be a large difference between a 57 and a 70s model. A refinish would definitely lower value significantly. You could still probably get more than 500 regardless if it's in good shape, but I wouldn't expect anywhere near 2200 based on the discrepancies we've seen so far.

Yes, now I am very interested to know what's going on...
I will have him take a pic of the paper and guitar.

Did they ever do replicas like Gibson does?
Maybe he has a replica of an older model or something

This site says that they weren't even made in 57, not until '64. Also doesn't say the original series ever came in natural. I would assume it's either been refinished or is a reissue like what's in stores now.

Ha, good catch. I didn't even bother to check the original issue date, I just knew they were only originally those three colors.
