Hey guys. So I recently bought an unfinished guitar body at a flea market with the idea of customizing it. Rather than doing the standard paint / finish I thought it might be cool to leave it with a natural finish and do some woodburning / engraving instead of painting it. A few questions as I have no experience with customizing.

1. Is this a terrible idea?

2. Will woodburning / engraving into the body effect the tone at all?

3. Would I still need to do some sort of an overcoat or finish on top of the engravings?

Thanks for any help!

I don't think it's going to affect the tone noticeably unless you remove a significant amount of wood from the body. Other than that, you'd still need to finish it with something to protect it or else it would get messed up over time. Even a clear coat would do the trick.
