Hi Pit.
I'm a huge concept albums fan. I find it pretty much the best kind of albums out there...
So I thought - why not ask the pit about it and maybe find some new albums worth listening to.

Just post your favorite concept albums and rock operas.

I'll go first:
Pretty much anything by Ayreon, especially The Human Equation.
Savatage - Streets
Orphaned Land - Mabool
The Who - Tommy (Obviously)
Evergrey - In Search Of Truth
Opeth - Still Life

to name a few...

Mars Volta- Frances the Mute, Deloused in the Comatorium.
Oct. 20th, 2009: New guitar AND front row for Mars Volta.

Is that a ukulele in your pants, or did you just rip ass to the tune of "Aloha Oi"?

I met Sonic Youth on June 30th, and Mars Volta on Oct 20th.

Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull.

Even though it's taking the piss out of concept albums, it still manages to be one of the best of all time.

EDIT: Oh and this:

Coheed and Cambria, the entire discography is one big concept. First four albums are The Amory Wars saga and the fifth album is the prequel to it.

Two bands I'm obsessed about : Coheed and Cambria.

Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth
Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory

Ahab - Call of The Wretched Sea
There's no such thing; there never was. Where I am going you cannot follow me now.

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
The Mars Volta - De-loused In The Comatorium
The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
Muse - Absolution

I def. love the idea of concept albums. If I ever manage to finish some of the music I write, it will be a concept album based around the timeline of the earth.

Adding another recommendation for the entire Coheed and Cambria discography. I simply adore the story. Of course, I'm also a huge sci-fi nerd so that helps.

Honorable mentions:
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
Pink Floyd - Animals

I'll add more as they come to mind.

When I see the phrase "Rock Opera" I think of a CD version of "Journey To The Centre Of The Earth" that I heard once - now out of production. It sported tracks of story narration with atmospheric background music and then songs after each narration. The style of each song differed, but I remember a symphonic rock number which was really awesome.

American Idiot - Green Day
Simple Math - Manchester Orchestra
The End Is Not The End - House Of Heroes
and
the
best
one
The Broken Bride - Ludo

You can't beat a rock opera about a man who loses his wife so he builds a time machine to go back and save her only to be trapped in the time of the dinosaurs, it is truly amazing.

Pink Floyd - The Wall
The Sword - Warp Riders
Ámáttr - Black Dawn (>.>
Bathory - Nordland I
Hey look, a stoner/doom album.

If Sum 41's newest album can be considered a concept album, that.
American Idiot - Green Day (I dunno what's up with me and pop-punk/punk rock concept albums)
Queensryche - American Soldier
