I have noticed a lot recently that a lot of popular artists that have a signature guitar made for them never use it themselves. I won't go through an entire list of what I found but I was just mainly aiming to create a conversation thread.

What do you guys think about this? Me personally, I would at least like to see what these artists can do with their own signature-made products, even if outsourced to a budget line like Squier, Epiphone or LTD. Is this more of a marketing strategy to get the attention of players that want to be more like their heroes?

The only real answer to the SG vs Les Paul debate is to get a Flying V and laugh at all the suckers who don't have one.

Eric Johnson uses his Signature Strat (both of them, though his Rosewood version has a Super Vee tremolo).
Actually, I go by Dave, but there are already too many Daves on this forum.

Maybe I'm just being thick but it seems to me like all artists who have signature gear use it (in my experience anyway, maybe I'm forgetting someone??).

EDIT: Unless you mean using a run of the mill production model of their sigs. IE Kirk Hammett using a KH202 or something, instead of his usual custom KH stuff??

I think signature guitars are more about the artist realizing that people want a guitar like theirs, and working with a company to create something similar to sell to the public,as opposed to the artist getting a ton of guitars like his own to use.
Take Tony Iommi, probably still uses his SG that the signature models are based off, but more than likely carries a few signatures with him as back-ups/spares,etc.

I think many guitarists use their signature guitar. But many will also have a different guitar for some songs.

What I hate is when I see an artist playing a bad-ass guitar, and I try to find it hoping it's a production model or a sig, only to find out it's custom made. This one, the Kenny Hickey Schecter Baritone, has been on my want list for a while now:

Oh, yeah...

That's a big one, I forgot about Clapton. Since he "retired" Blackie, he's just been using his signature Fender (well, like six of them).

Then there's also BB King's Lucille and Buddy Guy's Polka Dot Strat, though the model he uses has been discontinued but there's a MIM version based on it. And J. Mascis uses his signature Jazzmaster, and Jim Root and John 5 use their signature Telecasters.
Actually, I go by Dave, but there are already too many Daves on this forum.

Ibanez must pay them a fortune.

Not trying to suggest they're bad guitars or that Steve, Paul and Joe would rather be playing something else, but I'm guessing there's a pretty hefty cost involved in having somebody play your guitars exclusively.

Which are?

Marty Friedman used to play his Custom Kelly Jackson signatures when he was with Deth all the time. Alex Skolnick plays his Heritage (which is a Gibson from heaven basically) most of the time. Adrian Smith plays his usual Strat with hot rails but eventually ends up squeezing a song in on a Jackson RR and Gibson SG.

Adrian has a signature Jackson (or two sort of - slightly different specs and finishes) but they look just like strats more or less, a bit more metal I guess.

i think you'll find that most guys with sig guitars play them live. keep in mind that if a sig is based on a guitar the player owns that he may still play the original and not the sig copy (brian may comes to mind). i don't think ibanez pays steve or joe to play their guitars they just make them the guitars they want to play. yngwie plays his sig and it's because he loves fenders not because they pay him. in the studio i'm sure it's a different story as many guys use different guitars for different sounds.

Odd that, I thought he'd been using them for a while - he may have just been using a strat that looks similar to the current sig though. Granted I think on one of their DVDs from as recent as '05 or '07 or something he had a rack of squires (that's what he said in the clip anyway as I recall).

Yeah, most of the live videos I've seen of Maiden in the last few years, Adrian has been playing his Jackson sigs, aside from one or two songs. They're his main stage guitars now, I think.

He does, but only for certain songs in the setlist. Speaking of Rush, Alex Lifeson uses his signature Gibsons:

I've read that he, like Clapton, retired his original from road use, and now uses SGs modeled after it. Come to think of it, I believe Kim Thayil does likewise.

Yeah, I think a lot of famous guitarists have retired their particularly well known axes. I know that Dave Murray retired his '57 strat, and that's the one that his sig model is based on.

Yeah, that cost is making a great guitar.

I don't think any guitar company pays any player to play their guitars, though they do give them free swag for endorsements.

I think they tend to work on a sliding scale based on the policy of that particular company and the profile of the player. Really high profile guys will usually get a pile of free guitars, less well known players will just be given a discount to buy them.
#37
I know this isn't quite what you were asking about but I still think it's interesting. Apparently Pete Townsend likes to play Eric Clapton's signature strats live.
#38
Åkerfeldt and Åkesson use their SE sigs and their higher-range PRS models pretty much equally at concerts, which really annoys me.

If I had a Modern Eagle, I would hate to play an SE. But I guess they have to make a living.
