I'm looking for an all-tube amp head with lots of gain, and at least 100w

I'm using a budget of about $1000

I was looking at the Randall RT100h, anybody know if it's good?

Also, I would be playing in Drop A

EDIT: Yes, I have a cab. I have a Vader 4x12

I don't really need cleans.
Currently Using:

Washburn X-Series w/ SH-8 and Pearly Gates
Peavey Vypyr 120h
Peavey Valveking 412 Slant
ISP Decimator
Ernie Ball .12-.56

if you save up another $100-200 you would be able to pick up a Splawn QR or PM. nitros run a little higher. i picked up my pm for $1,000 and my Nitro for $1100, but those were exceptional deals that i waited and stalked for a while. they are killer amps. i think you would be better off with a nitro, but the QR/PM would likely have enough gain.

Peavey 6505+/6534+ or 5150 I/II
You can pick a 5150 II head up for $600 easily (used) assuming you live in the US.

But that's probably the only amp people know of nowadays.

Then I'd say try to find a Splawn Nitro. You may not like the voicing of the amp, but I think its pretty damn awesome. There's a few vids on YT.

there really aren't any videos that really show the nitro in its heaviest settings. also as far as Splawn goes, Scott Splawn is an awesome guy, friendly reachable by phone if you have a question or problem. its a four man shop that puts out 3-5 heads per week.

there are plenty of sites to find a nitro. ebay, tgp classifieds, HC classifides, RT classifides, etc. if you are patient you should be able to find a nitro at least below $1400.

You have to wait until one pops up in the used market. Which isn't all to often as they don't make that many and I don't think people really want to get rid of them.

either a 3120 or a used Mesa Dual Rec should be in your price range
Bassist/Vocalist-Visceral Violation
Mesa-Boogie Big Block 750/SWR Megoliath

3120 is super tight and really bright. and from everyone ive talked to, everyone unanimously agrees the 6534+ has better rhythym tones than the 3120. but the 3120 has better leads and cleans as well as 3 channels which is pretty cool.

for the record, I own the 6534+, my buddy/ the other guitarist of my band owns the 3120.
#22
*sigh*....

6505

or any other generic high gain amp really. a lot of death metal and stuff doesnt really have any iconic or definable tone. should be good with any of the recommendations in here

If your playing more like a tech death/melodic thing, the XXX works better IMO.

I do prefer the 5150 though.

Both amps are such iconic extreme metal amps. The Ampeg VH-140 too. Try throwing a distortion in front of a JCM800, as a boost. Thats one of my favorite tones.

with my limited experience with a jcm 800, I dont think its tight enough for what the TS wants. I could be totally wrong on that though, the one I layed was great for like everything up to modern rock, and a bit heavier than metal like Master of puppets.

and like I said a couple posts up, it really dependswhat you want if he decided 6534/6505 or 3120/XXX. one give better rhythym tones. one gives better leads and cleans.

But seriously wth cares if its one of the most recommended amps seriously??
It does what it does very well and falls into the budget of pretty much anyone with a job

Now ts-
Mesa mark iv-used $900-1400 depending on condition
Mesa 2 ch. dual or triple rec- used $700-1400 depending on condition or revision.
Peavey-5150/6505-used $400-800 I wouldnt pay $800
These are what id be looking at

2 ch reectos now go on ebay for under 1200 for the most part if youre in the US and its not a special revision or something.

mark IV is also a good suggestion if the TS can find one for his price

i dont care, it is just that the thread starter doesn't have to see it six or seven times in the same tthread, with people posting back to back the same recommendation, its just dumb. i can understand a +1 and a +2 to confirm its a good option, which then the thread starter should listen to demos either online or play one at a store if possible, or just check out other posts.

Lies. They went up They're running about $750 (sucks I was gonna get one but meh now).

TS: you can get a Used dual rectifier in that budget. Other used options A krank rev+ (such an under rated head!). There is always the 6505 (5150). A soldano hot rod 50.

Dual Rec

Krank Rev

hot rod 50

5150

That's just off the top of my head.

But The Rev+ is amazing! Such an underrated head!! Plenty of gain, lots of clarity and with the sweep knob the eq is really controllable. You could use it for blues rock to death metal. And you can set the clean channel to be a crunch channel. Really check it out

EDIT: Another Underrated company, Hughes and Kettner check these out

H&k Switchblade

Trilogy (over budget but so worth it)

Not a day goes by when I wake up regretting trading mine for a Mesa Single Rectifier....

EDIT AGAIN!: Another head thats great for Death Metal the Randall V2 . It's not all tube, it's hybrid but it sounds and feels like an all tube head and is plenty loud at 400watts... Sounds really good, this is what I had before my H&K..
