Well my last thread of tube test wasn't a very accurate portrayal of the tubes I tested. This time I have everything squared down. The amp I'm using is a Baron Custom Amps K88 Custom and the DI tracks I'm using are from the Guitar Tracks from Guitar Tone Competition 3 by JeffTD.

Here's the tubes I'm using.

The amp's settings were all set to noon. Even the master so it was loud as **** in here. :hbang:

Alright, I'm going to organize this as best I can.

I recorded using 1 guitar from the DIs and two guitars form the DIs.

Here's the set of tracks with the single guitar.

Some of the last few clips don't start till 5 seconds in. Sorry about that.

Any how, I how this is more helpful and if you guys want WAV clips for an even more accurate representation let me know.

Remember that everyone will have different results in their amp; if they can even use different kinds of tubes. This was just my observation, power tubes really change the tone of your amp; especially different kinds/brands.

Gonna give it all a listen now.

Quick first impressions were that the big bottle tubes had better low end, and the JJs cut better than the EHX. The Rubys sounded better than expected after some of the horror stories I've heard about them.

Really? Rubys are actually the best tubes I've ever used. Dave at Baron Custom Amp swears by them. They are basically rebranded tubes, if you get them from dougstubes.com then you'll get some quality Rubys for sure!

I'll keep that in mind.

I would recommend the Rubys over the JJs. Much more reliable and have much better sound qualities.
#7
Really? because my amp has rubys stock. Ive always heard they were pretty meh but reliable and cheap
#8
Is it stock with Ruby EL34 BHTs? Because the BSTRs aren't that great. The BHTs are really nice though.

Mesa tubes are re-branded Rubys. But the power tubes are STRs, that might explain some of the crappy sound from them. Maybe I'll check out Ruby EL34s for the Laney. Would you say that they can tame some high end?

They are a pretty balanced tube. They do have a little more warmth to them though in my opinion than other EL34s.

Odd. Idk, they sound really nice in my amp. I just really hate JJs. They caused my amp to blow a electrolytic cap and burnt up a tube socket to hell. I got it fixed but theres something about JJs that just really suck in my opinion.

If you want a quality tube though man.

That's what you want. Rebranded Winged =C= EL34. Best EL34 tone out there hands down. =C= 6550s sound amazing too. (I don't like 6550s though because they are very sterile)

well right now In my amps preamp I run all JJ 12ax7s, except in V3 or V4 (notsure which one) I run a 12au7. the 12au7 takes alot of the gain out of the crunch boost but adds alot of punch and dynamics to the clean channel while still retaining clarity, with the lead channel unchanged
#14
Yeah I've owned a 6505, 6505+, and 5150. Those are the only amps I like JJ preamp tubes in. Otherwise no go for me. Try out the winged Cs though. I know you'll love them.

I couldn't hear much difference in the single track clips, but boy the two-track ones really give it away.

The Ruby EL34s sound great, as do the JJ KT88s. I wasn't a big fan of the E34L or the EHXs.

Greg what did you send me??

I think that either the Ruby EL34s or JJ KT88s are the best to my ear. The KT88s had maybe a little more "balls" in the tone, while the EL34s sounded like as EL34s should. When I get a good tube amp, I'm probably gonna try Rubys if I ever get my hands on those.
