I've been wanting to put something like this together now for quite some time, and It'll benefit those who especially are able to pump out riffage like a madman. Before I we can begin, I'm wanting to shoot for atleast 10 contestants. The more the merrier, of course! So feel free to come up with something good and enter it! I'm also wanting to do a series of these as well, so we'll see where this one goes first

Requirements

Entry Notes:
-Your riff MUST be written in Guitar Pro 4, 5, or 6. If you don't have Guitar Pro, download TuxGuitar, it is a free program that can play and save in Guitar Pro format.

-Your riff MUST have a Drum and Bass track for the riff in it. Any other added backing instruments are acceptable (Strings, Piano, Synth, Etc.) as well on top of your riff but it must have at least a Drum and Bass track to it.

-Your riff MUST be at least 4 bars long, and no longer than 8 bars.

-Your riff can be any tuning, any time signature, any tempo, 6 7 8 string, can repeat as a whole as many times as you want, and can have different endings but it must be within the entry requirements.

Judges

[1] Majin Gaara
[2] rami80
[3] MatrixClaw
[4] Odirunn
[5] ChemicalFire

Contestants

  • Andras67
  • j-falafel
  • Sign Of War
  • Afroboy267
  • kcorkcar
  • Cavalcade
  • SquierLolz

WILL POST DEADLINE ONCE WE HAVE AT LEAST 10 PARTICIPANTS

Additional Info

Feel free to write this riff into GP first. Maybe jam it out on your actual axe and then transcribe it into GP. Either or, Once you have it transcribed, add some Bass and Drums to it and you're good to go! Once It's finished, save your GP file as:

MetalRiffEntry_(Usernamehere)

Shoot me a pm with it. You can upload your GP
file to many popular file sharing and hosting websites, But I suggest using Dropbox , as it is far easier to post your file.

Lastly, I'll be doing this contest in a riff vs riff style to where we can have a champion of the contest. Riffs will be paired up and then judged to see whose the victor. That riff will move on and challange the other ones that have also won. The champion of the best riff will be put into the UG Metal Riff Hall Of Fame ... But, it's more just so for shit's and giggles... And for fun of course!

So that's about it! If you want to be a judge, or be a contestant, just reply and say which one you want to do, and I'll mark you down. when we get 5 judges, I'll put up a deadline so we can start the timer. Until then, enjoy this grace period and start writing!

FYI Guys!
Remember, It's about making the riff as best as possible, so go ahead and add those 13 overdubs to it But seriously, If you wanna get crazy with it and layer other guitar parts over your riff, feel free! The point is to have fun writing this and don't be afraid to experiment a little!

Seems like a good idea but could we please use the proper sub-forum?

I figured this would be a good place to put it. A mod can move it if so needed.

That's the most unique sounding riff I've ever heard!

/sarcasm.

You're gonna have to do better than that

We'll also have to know what the judges like, so we don't give a metalcore fanboy a brutal death metal riff and they don't like it.

I'll give it a go. Be good to challenge myself and see what I can come up with .

Edit: Can you send me your email, it's a lot easier to do it that way.

I was going to see if we can get judges of all kinds of metal so we can get a fair and even vote.

Still, we'd have to know what they like.
As you know, there are more than 5 genres on metal, there's actually over 174, so we need to get 5 musically diverse people to judge, not some biased deathcore fanboy that thinks anything but BMTH is shit.

I'd gladly judge. Good metal is good metal, regardless of subgenre.

Though I think at the end of the contest, the top 3-5 should be posted in a final poll for all of the forum to vote on. The judges can weed down all the submissions, but the whole forum should be the judge of who wins in the end

Sounds good! We could very well do that. It'd be the top 4 in this case as it'd be the semi finals!

I wouldn't mind judging.

Wrong forum really, as this has nothing to do with recording and you're not supposed to encourage piracy (i.e the first rule/bullet point in the OP. Not interested but have fun and good luck to those who enter...

True, but I think we'll allow it for now, unless the other mods disagree. There is a Tabs and Chords section of the forum, which is to show off songs written in Guitar Pro, so this kind of applies.

As to the piracy mention in Majin Gaara's first post - I edited it out and added a legal option. Ultimate-Guitar does not endorse piracy and any mention of encouraging it will not be tolerated. Please don't let me catch you doing it again. I know you meant well, but there are alternative options that are free and legal.

Everyone should probably just record their sweet riffs. If it's strictly tabs, should prob move to the tab or competition section.

You don't think "Recording Contests" is the correct place for something like this? I'm all for the contest, but I'd hate to see the recording forum start to get bogged down with threads that should be in one of the sub-forums. I mean that's why we have them right?

I do apologize for what I had said. I will keep that at bay next time around.

As for recording riffs, You can. But, I wanted to keep it GP style because it's so much easier to add bass and drums to it.

ALSO: We meed 5 more people to jump in on this, and then we can start the DEADLINE!

You're added.

4 more to go. I'm digging the entries so far.

I still need submissions from the other 4 contestants as well.
